Over 500 passengers were trapped after a Mumbai monorail train came to a halt between two stations amid torrential rain in the city on Tuesday. The train, which runs on an elevated track, was stuck for over two hours, and suffered a "minor power supply issue".
The technical snag occurred around 6:15 pm when the train was running between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park stations. Fire brigade and rescue officials were carrying out rescue operations to evacuate the passengers using cranes.
"I was in the train from 5:30 PM. The rescue operation started after 1 hour. There were at least 500 passengers in the train. This train arrived after a gap of 30 minutes, so the entire train was overloaded with passengers," said a passenger who was rescued to ANI.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said he was in contact with the concerned officials and ordered an inquiry into the incident. He also urged passengers not to panic.
He assured that all passengers would be safely evacuated and requested everyone to remain patient. He added that he was in contact with the MMRDA Commissioner, the Municipal Commissioner, the police, and all relevant agencies, and that an inquiry would also be conducted into the cause of the incident.
