As happens every year .... PM Modi's Independence Day speech draws mixed reactions :: ".... self reliant armed forces... the need of the hour"

Former military commander Lt Gen R N Kapur (Retd) says Prime Minister Narendra Modi's Independence Day speech reflects timely realisation that adequate steps ought to be taken in right earnest to make Bharat/India a "regional power and world power" in due course of time.

" The main take away from the speech of the PM is that wisdom has dawned that to make India into a Regional Force initially and later into a World Power, a strong self reliant armed forces needs to be developed," he said.

"It can only happen if the decision making is left to the senior echelons of the Armed Forces, supported by bureaucracy and not controlled. Just a thought !," said General Kapur within minutes the Prime Minister's address was over.

Lt Gen Kapur has served in tough regions like Nagaland in the 1990s.

Congress leader Jairam Ramesh, considered one of the advisors of Rahul Gandhi, described the PM's speech as “stale, hypocritical, insipid, and troubling.”

“The most troubling element of the PM's speech was his name-checking of the RSS from the ramparts of the Red Fort, a blatant breach of the spirit of a constitutional, secular republic,” Jairam Ramesh wrote on X.

AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi also criticised the PM for applauding RSS.

TV anchor-turned-neta Sagarika Ghosh said the Prime Minister has tried to target a new enemy - the "infiltrators".

Her remarks are in the context of Prime Minister's statement -- :

"Under a conspiracy and a well-planned plot, the country's Demography is being changed, new crises are being sown and infiltrators are snatching the livelihood of the youth of the country."

Modi announced that his government has decided to "launch a High Powered Demography Mission" -- that work in "a well thought out and definite manner in the stipulated time".

Obviously targeting the 'infiltrators' and the Demography Mission will continue to make headlines in West Bengal as the state goes to polls early next year.
