G 20 to P 20 : Indian Parliament to host P-20 Conference of Parliament Speakers of G-20 nations from Oct 12

(The Parliamentary track in the G20 started in 2010 at Ottawa, Canada as a consultative meet of the Speakers of select 20 countries. Moreover, P20 has not been hosted under every G20 Presidency)








50 Parliamentarians and 14 Secretaries General including 26 Presidents, 10 Vice Presidents, 01 Committee Chairman and the IPU President have confirmed their participation. Shri Birla informed that the Speakers of the Pan African Parliament will be participating in the P-20 Summit in India for the first time.



With the spirit of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam – One Earth, One Family, One Future', India aims to provide consensus-based solutions to complex global issues towards a more inclusive, peaceful and equitable world, said Birla.

Lok Sabha speaker Om Birla on Friday said Canada has confirmed its participation in the upcoming G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit (P20) which will be held in Delhi from October 12 to 14.  





Canada’s participation in the summit comes at a time when bilateral ties between New Delhi and Ottawa have strained following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s statement alleging India’s link to the killing of Khalistani leader Hardeep Singh Nijjar.  


Addressing a press conference in Delhi, Speaker Birla said,”All countries have been invited, and Canada’s Senate Speaker has sent confirmation about attending the event that will have 50 members of Parliament, 14 general secretaries including 26 Presidents and 10 Vice-Presidents participating. The President of the Pan African Parliament will attend the P-20 event in India for the first time.”


Birla said the key narrative of the P20 meeting is titled ‘India as the mother of democracy’ and will have participants weighing, both formally and informally on a clutch of issues concerning stakeholders.


The P20 is a forum of Speakers and Presidents of Parliaments from G20 countries that provide a platform for parliamentary leaders to discuss and share best practices on issues of global importance.


The two-day event that will be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on October 13 and have four sessions where participants will discuss issues including transformation in people’s lives through public digital platforms, women-led development, accelerating sustainable development goals, and sustainable energy transition.


A pre-summit event, Parliamentary Forum on LiFE (Lifestyle for Environment) will be held on October 12. A 'Mother of Democracy' exhibition will be presented to highlight India's ancient and participative democratic traditions.  


Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla said as the world’s largest democracy, India will try to effectively resolve global issues through this platform. 


Holding a meeting with Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on Thursday, Birla also called for joint efforts to abate global issues, such as climate change. 


He expressed pride over the historical relations between the two maritime nations that have developed on the basis of mutual political understanding, their faith in democratic systems of Governance, and multifaceted economic-commercial relations over centuries. Birla also lauded the Indian community in Tanzania for their contribution to Tanzania’s economic development. 


The Speaker also highlighted India’s investments in the various sectors of Tanzania and assured it remains a reliable partner in its development journey.




The first full-fledged P20 Summit was organised in 2018 by the Parliament of Argentina in collaboration with Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU). So far, eight meetings of G20 Speakers have taken place with the latest held under Indonesia's G20 Presidency in Jakarta on Oct 6-7, 2022. 


Four sessions have been planned for the 9th P-20 Delhi Summit
