Congress, Leftists and others - altogether 19 Opposition parties including PM-ambitious lot like Trinamool Congress of Mamata Banerjee have decided to boycott the historic inauguration of New Parliament Building on May 28. The basic idea is to take on the mite of the Modi Govt and Narendra Modi's popularity. But who can have the last laugh?
With 93 members in the Rajya Sabha, the BJP is four behind these parties. But, the ruling party has a sizeable lead if the support of smaller NDA allies and parties such as the YSRCP and BJD is considered. Moreover and perhaps much importantly, the 19 parties' list to boycott the May 28 event does not include BRS of K Chandrasekhar Rao.
The 19 parties are Congress, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), Janata Dal (United), Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Shiv Sena (Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray), Communist Party of India (Marxist), Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), Communist Party of India (CPI), Indian Union Muslim League (IUML), Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM), National Conference, Kerala Congress (Mani), Revolutionary Socialist Party (RSP), Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK), Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), and the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD).
“We will take a decision tomorrow (May 25) whether to attend the inauguration programme or not,” BRS Parliamentary Party leader K Keshava Rao said.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Wednesday (May 24) said the upcoming inauguration of the new parliament building will also see Prime Minister Narendra Modi install a historic sceptre from Tamil Nadu next to the Lok Sabha Speaker’s seat.
Known as Sengol — derived from the Tamil word “Semmai”, meaning “Righteousness”, according to an official document — the sceptre is a “significant historical” symbol of Independence as it signifies the transfer of power from the British to the Indians, Shah told the media.
The opposition parties in their statement said, "When the soul of democracy has been sucked out from the Parliament, we find no value in a new building. We announce our collective decision to boycott the inauguration of the new Parliament building".
"Only when the President of India summons the Parliament can it meet? The President begins, annually, Parliamentary functioning by addressing the joint session. The first business Parliament transacts each year is the "Motion of Thanks" to the President's Address," CPI-M leader Sitaram Yechury tweeted.
