New Delhi
Stage is set for a fierce electoral contest on Feb 27 in two northeastern states of Meghalaya and Nagaland.
The BJP and NDPP released their respective lists of candidates for elections to the 60-member Nagaland assembly. The saffron party also named its candidates for all 60 assembly segments in Meghalaya.
The BJP had fielded only 47 candidates and won two seats in 2018 in Meghalaya but this time they have fielded candidates in all 60 segments.
Importantly for Meghalaya, the BJP's names of party nominees included six women.

Though a matrilineal society, Meghalaya's politics used to be generally male dominated.
The BJP is ambitious of doing well in the Garo hills this year.
"We are confident of doing well. This year's election is for 'New India' under the visionary leadership of Prime
Minister Narendra Modi. We will do extremely well in both Nagaland and Meghalaya and prove our
detractors wrong," BJP national vice president M Chuba Ao said.
"The people of Meghalaya are fed up with corruption and the slow pace of development in their
state. The people are suffering due to poor rural roads, power cuts for long hours and lack of basic
facilities," another BJP leader Rituraj Sinha said.
BJP's candidates' list for Meghalaya include Bernard N Marak, who will take on Chief Minister
and NPP chief Conrad Sangma.
Meanwhile, a controversy has been kicked off between Congress and NPP in Meghalaya over
remarks from Conrad Sangma.
The Congress has hit back at Chief Minister Conrad for his 'claim' that there was no development in Meghalaya
in the 45 years under Congress rule.
AICC media coordinator, Bobbeeta Sharma asked the Chief Minister, "....if his father, the late PA Sangma, did not
do anything for the state as the CM (1988-90), MP and Union Minister. What message is the CM (Conrad)
trying to give? That his father was a failure? That, as a Congressman, the late Purno Sangma did not
contribute anything".
In Meghalaya, the BJP central election committee reposed faith in former IPS officer
K Kharkrang for the prestigious North Shillong assembly segment.
Kharkrang quit his job last August and had joined the BJP "with a lot of high expectations"
to serve the people of Shillong and his constituency.
Among others four former MLAs who joined the saffron outfit in December walked away with the tickets.
Four former MLAs are - Benedict Marak (Raksamgre) and Ms Fairlene Sangma (Selsella) - both who were
with the NPP. Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang (Mawsynram) was in Trinamool and Samuel Sangma
Independent MLA represented the Baghmara assembly segment.
