Kerala CM speaks like Amit Shah ? Defends NIA taking over cases against CPI(M) 'students'

Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Feb 4, Tuesday said some terrorists "operating in Kerala" have nexus with Maoists and therefore the opposition Congress should glorify the ultras.

He defended the NIA move to take over UAPA cases against two student activists of CPI(M).

"There is no need to justify the maoists just because you are politically opposing the Left Democratic Front (LDF). We all know what the Maoists are doing," he said.

Two Left wing students Fazal and Suhaib, students of journalism and law and the CPI(M)'s branch committee members were arrested in Kozhikode. Predictably, there was a bit of political hangama and the issue was raised in Kerala assembly also.

In his reply, CM Pinarayi Vijayan asked the opposition Congress-led UDF not to justify Maoists just because they (UDF) oppose the Left.
Cases were registered not based on political pressure, he maintained.

"There is no need to justify the maoists just because you are politically opposing the Left Democratic Front (LDF). We all know what the Maoists are doing," Kerala CM said.

Leader of the Opposition Ramesh Chennithala raised the issue in the House.

UDF leader M K Muneer, who moved the notice, contended that Taha Fazal (24) and Alan Suhaib (20) arrested on November 2, 2019 were under custody without any evidence against them.

"Some people might get misleaded. Instead of encouraging such acts, we need to rectify their mistakes," the chief minister said.

A third person, Usman, who was associated with the two students, was an accused in at least five cases under UAPA.

Chennithala mocked at Vijayan's reply to the notice and said he felt as if he was listening to Amit Shah in the Lok Sabha.

"...Why can't the chief minister approach Amit Shah seeking the withdrawal of UAPA against these two students. It's better than falling at the feet of the Governor," Chennithala said.

He was apparently referring to the recent exchanges between Governor Arif Mohammed Khan and the LDF government over the latter's stand on Citizenship Amendment Act.

Minister of State for Home G Kishan Reddy said in Lok Sabha that based on the Parliament's recommendation, a declaration was issued by the President on August 6, 2019 under Article 370 and the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir was reorganised into the Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir and the Union Territory of Ladakh.

"Full economic potential of Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh regions could not be realised for the last 70 years as the people of Jammu and Kashmir have suffered from terrorist violence and separatism supported from across the border for the past many decades," he said, replying to a written question.

During 2019-20 (upto January, 2020), 18.34 lakh MTs of fresh fruit (apples) have been dispatched.

In the horticulture sector, under the Market Intervention Schemes (MIS) launched by the Government of India in September 2019, for the first time, 15769.38 MTs of apples valued at Rs.70.45 crores have been procured up to January 28, 2020, directly from the growers in Kashmir valley through National Agriculture Marketing Federation of India (NAFED). This scheme has been extended up to March 31, 2020.

Narendra Modi Govt giving partition of 'Indian soul', alleges Shashi Tharoor

New Delhi, Feb 4  Congress lawmaker Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday slammed the Modi government saying it has failed on multiple fronts including on providing a good governance and asserted that the ruling dispensation is now working to divide the 'soul of India'.

"They are dividing this country....Hindus versus Muslims, Desh drohis versus Desh Bhakts, Hindi speakers versus non-Hindi speakers....In 1947, we had a partition of Indian soil, in 2020, this government is giving us a partition of Indian soul," the Congress member said in Lok Sabha amid 'shame, shame' cheers from several Opposition members.

Taking a pot shot at the alleged lip service given by the NDA towards its much hyped slogan 'Sabka Vikas, Sabha Saath and Sabka Vishwas', Mr Tharoor said,  "Honestly it reminds me what Napoleon had said that it was neither Holy, nor Roman nor an empire. And here we have neither Sabka Saath, nor development nor faith".

Participating in the debate on Motion of Thanks to President's address, the former Union Minister said, "In last few months under this government we have witnessed a fundamental assault on the democratic, secular and constitutional fabric of India".

He went onto say that the present ruling dispensation has turned into a 'Tukde Tukde gang...'. Mr Tharoor said the country is facing 'an existential threat' to Indian democracy as the Modi government took measures like abrogation of Article 370 and the UAPA Bill with its 'draconian measures'.

He alleged that the government also misled President Ram Nath Kovind on Mahatma Gandhi as Gandhiji's speech in reference to minorities in neighbouring Pakistan was 'selectively quoted' in the address of January 31.

He said Gandhiji's statement was misused to justify enacting of the new Citizenship law. "This government misled the Rashtrapati about the Rashtra-pita....," he charged. "If the government continues down this very slippery slope...no matter how many leaders from history you borrow or whose name you seek to hijack, you will be exposed," he cautioned the Modi government adding, "History will see you for what you are really are, men with limited vision unable to comprehend the great diversity of India".

PM speaks about CAA, Kejriwal Govt, Delhi polls

Delhi needs a government that will give direction and not resort to blame games - PM Modi

The prime minister accused the AAP dispensation of not implementing the Ayushman Bharat scheme in the national capital and asked if the AAP government's 'mohalla clinics' will work if Delhiites fall sick outside the city.

Modi, who addressed a rally in east Delhi's Karkardooma locality on Monday, said the people of Delhi have seen how the AAP government practises the politics of hate.

The people of Delhi say the country has changed, and now is the time for Delhi's transformation, the prime minister told the gathering.

"Delhi does not need a government which gives opportunity to enemies to attack us," he said.

Why Govt does not say NRC will 'never come', says Owaisi

New Delhi, Feb 4  Joining issue with the government for its latest stand on the high voltage NRC issue in Lok Sabha, AIMIM leader Asaduddin Owaisi wanted to know on Tuesday why the NDA regime has not said that the NRC will 'never come' in this country.

"Kabhi nahi, nahi likha hae. They are saying till now....," the Hyderabad lawmaker said in Lok Sabha participating in the debate on Motion of Thanks to President's address.

He said NRC is only the 'other side' of the National Population of Register (NPR) and challenged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to clarify on the same.

"If NPR is carried out, the NRC will be also there....It is not today, but it can come tomorrow or day after," he said.

The vocal lawmaker's observation comes shortly after Union Minister of State for Home Nityanand Rai said in a written reply in Lok Sabha that: "Till now, the government has not taken any decision to prepare National Register of Indian Citizens (NRC) at the national level".

The issue was raised by Trinamool Congress member Sukhendu Sekhar Roy in Rajya Sabha also.

"What is happening in the country these days (in reference to row over CAA) is similar to the situation in Germany in 1937 and Italy under Mussolini in 1938," Mr Owaisi said.

The AIMIM leader said it is with this intent that the government has allocated staggeringly high Rs 3941.35 crore for updating the National Population Register.

The amount was sanctioned by the Union cabinet in its sitting on December 24, 2019.

He maintained that the process of census is different from NPR and wanted to know why new category of information is sought from the individual in the recently initiated NPR exercise.

Contesting Prime Minister's contention that the CAA is only to give citizenship, the lawmaker said this is not true as CAA or the similar exercise in Assam also deprives citizenship to over five lakh Muslims - who speak Bengali.

"You are giving citizenship to five lakh Bengali speaking Hindus but deprive citizenship to Muslims," he remarked amid objections from ruling bench members.

Referring to protest from Muslim women in some parts of the country on CAA (including in Shaheen Bagh), he said, "Prime Minister himself had said he is brother of Muslim women, and now that some Muslim women is sitting on protest, why is the brother getting angry".

"This ongoing battle (in reference to ant-CAA protest) is fight for very existence for the Muslims. If we fail in this stir, we will be finished," Mr Owaisi said.

Raising the issue of sloganeering 'Goli Maro Gardaro ko', the Hyderabad MP said, "Maro Mujjhe (Come and Kill me)".

Mamata regime does not want effective border fencing: Dilip Ghosh

New Delhi, Feb 4 Making its intent clear that the saffron party would intensify the battle against the Mamata Banerjee-led regime in West Bengal, the state BJP chief Dilip Ghosh on Tuesday alleged that Trinamool Congress administration does not want to protect the international boundary.

"Our international border is not safe (in Bengal)....There is no proper barbed wire fencing and so infiltrators keep coming into our state. The state government does not want that the state is safe," Mr Ghosh alleged while participating in the debate on Motion of Thanks to President's address.

"The Modi government has given enough to this country....But for people of West Bengal, what is of much significance is this new Citizenship law," he asserted.

"Lakhs of people had come into this country to save their honour and dignity, they came to India to protect the dignity of their women members in the family. They did not come for low priced ration," he said amid repeated objections by several Trinamool Congress MPs.

Mr Ghosh said right from Mahatma Gandhi to former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, leaders from various parties have favoured bringing such a law. "No body brought it....Our party's founder Syama Prasad Mookerjee has sacrificed his life and dedicated himself to work for refugees. It was in order to serve these people that he had resigned from Pt Nehru's cabinet," he said.

Fulfilling these assurances, Mr Ghosh said, Prime Minister Modi's government has taken this historic step and brought in the CAA.

"These refugees have also made sacrifices for country's freedom. Giving citizenship to this section of people was a national duty," he remarked in reference to CAA which has of course been opposed vehemently by opposition parties including Trinamool Congress.

He lashed out at the Trinamool Congress regime in the state for pursuing politics of 'untouchability' and said one Trinamool Congress leader was given a show cause notice just for sharing stage with him (Ghosh). "This is the democracy, they are pursuing....it is untouchability," he said.

Slamming Ms Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress and other parties, he said, "When Hindus face torture in Jammu and Kashmir, there is no rally in Bengal. When Hindus are attacked in Bangladesh and Pakistan, there is no rally, no Shaheen Bagh".

He said most of the protest against CAA is only party of a political drama.

"Yeh democracy dhund rahen hae.....lekin bangal mein democracy nahi hae (It is Trinamool Congress which is going across the country talking about democracy, but there is no democracy in Bengal)," he said.

"There is no democracy in the state assembly nor outside," he said even as Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla remarked that no reference should be made about a presiding officer of a state assembly.

The vocal BJP lawmaker Ghosh referred to several instances wherein the ruling Trinamool Congress dispensation in Bengal shows disrespect to constitutional provisions and also to the Governor in office.

He said it was unbecoming of Trinamool Congress MPs to display placards during President's address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament and said, "While they raised placards showing No CAA, No NRC, the day is not far off when people of Bengal and India will show No Congress, No TMC and No CPI(M)".

"We have a state where there are slogans 'Go back' for elected Prime Minister Narendra Modi, but there is no such slogan for Rohingya infiltrators coming into the state," he said.

Bengal BJP chief said despite growing popularity of the saffron party in the state as demonstrated by the Lok Sabha polls, the Lotus party is more often denied permission to organise political meetings and rallies.

Pralhad calls Cong followers of 'Nakli Gandhi - Sonia Gandhi'; Cong walks out

New Delhi, Feb 4 (UNI) A vociferous Opposition, led by Congress, staged a walkout from the Lok Sabha on Tuesday following uproar over a BJP leader's controversial remark against Mahatma Gandhi.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, Congress floor leader Ahir Ranjan Chowdhury said it was unbecoming of a ruling party leader Ananth Hegde to make such statement against the 'Mahatma'.

"Aaj yeh Mahatma Gandhi ko gaali deten haen....(Today these people are showing disrespect to Mahatma Gandhi)," Mr Chowdhury said and some of his remarks were 'expunged' from the proceedings of the House.

The charge was outrightly denied by Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

"We are the real followers of Mahatma Gandhi...these people are followers of Nakli Gandhi like Sonia Gandhi......," Mr Joshi remarked amid uproarious scenes.

''How can these people can say that when Sonia and Rahul are themselves out on bail?'' he questioned.

Meanwhile, Congress members entered into the well and raised slogans "BJP Party Godse Party" and "Mahatma Gandhi Amar Rahe (Long Live Mahatma Gandhi)".

Congress leader Tarun Gogoi and others demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi make the statement in the House.

Speaker Om Birla tried to pacify the agitating members and said the House cannot function smoothly if they are agitating like this.

Later, Mr Chowdhury and his party members staged a walkout saying, "We are walking out, finding no alternative." DMK and Trinamool Congress also joined them.

Congress veteran Janardhan Dwivedi's son Samir joins BJP

New Delhi, Feb 4 Senior Congress leader Janardan Dwivedi's son Samir Dwivedi, a retired army officer, joined the ruling BJP in presence of party general secretary Arun Singh here on Tuesday.

"I have been apolitical person and decided to join BJP as I feel good people and educated people should join politics. I have decided to join BJP with some of my associates as we felt Narendra Modi has delivered on Article 370 and Triple Talaq and other issues we always felt the government should act," Samir Dwivedi told reporters.

Samir's father, Janardan Dwivedi has been general secretary of the Congress party for 14 years and was seen as close to Sonia Gandhi.

Mr Dwivedi also worked with Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, BJP general secretary Arun Singh said.

Mr Singh described Samir Dwivedi as an 'active' individual and said, "he is joining BJP after being influenced by Prime Minister's policies and works".

Samir Dwivedi served as Lt Colonel and took retirement in 2008, Mr Singh said.

BJP MP Dilip Ghosh on Feb 4 used 'Shikhandi' barb in Lok Sabha against the Trinamool Congress government in West Bengal as he alleged lack of action against violent anti-CAA protesters.
He claimed that protesters there were enjoying themselves feeding on "foreign biryani bought from foreign money". The BJP is opposed to this drama, Ghosh said.
