Sribhumi (near Silchar) - Violence
An alleged attack on a Bihu cultural troupe in Sribhumi, Assam, has led to widespread protests and police investigations.
On the night of October 23, 2026, an Assamese Bihu cultural troupe was invited to perform during a Durga Puja immersion procession organized by the Hindustan Club in Sribhumi (earlier called Karimganj).
Tension flared near the immersion ghat after a member of the Bihu troupe reportedly stumbled or collided with someone in the crowd, leading to a physical clash and street brawl. Video footage suggested that the altercation may have escalated from a local scuffle involving people participating in the procession rather than a targeted ethnic attack.
On Oct 26, members of All Assam Students' Union (AASU) staged a protest in Sribhumi in front of DC office.
Raising slogans 'We want justice' and 'Ei Jui Jolisey' the protesters demanded justice. Condemning the incident, Tai Ahom Yuva Parishand said the incident has hurt the people.
Senior SP Leena Doley said the episode was triggered after some people involved had consumed alcohol. There was no communal angle into the incident. Police have arrested 17 people in connection with the case.
