In 2016, a character called Kanhaiya Kumar was 'lionised' by the anti-Modi and anti-Hindu ecosystem.
A special variety of journalists - anti-Modi for years and including several Muslim and Christian writers/commentators - glorified Kanhaiya.
Earlier even Jammu and Kashmir had such characters,
In Gujarat - it was Hardik Patel and Alpesh Thakor. The ecosystem worked hard to make the right caste combo and hence Jignesh Mevani was propped up as the 'Dalit' face.
Jignesh Mevani is a Congress Neta, lawyer, activist and also a so-called 'former journalist' serving as the representative of the Vadgam constituency in the Gujarat Legislative Assembly since 2017.
Jignesh won Vadgam as an Independent candidate in 2017 and in 2022 as a Congress nominee.
He is also the convener of the Rashtriya Dalit Adhikar Manch. But in circa 2026 - in this cacophony of fight against Election Commission; we have not heard about Jignesh Mevani.
We also do not get much to hear and read about characters like Hardik Patel.
He joined BJP June 2, 2022 in Gandhinagar in presence of state unit president C R Patel. He was working president of Gujarat Congress and quit the party in May 2022.
Hardik later contested and won the December 2022 Gujarat Assembly election as a BJP candidate from Viramgam constituency.
To give due credit to Hardik. He shot into fame during an anti-reservation protest in Gujarat and the stir actually forced BJP to replace Anandiben Patel as the chief minister. Vijay Rupani was brought in. He too was replaced by Bhupendra Patel and unfortunately, Vijay Rupani expired in plane crash in Ahmedabad,
Sickular media loved to say in 2016 that Kanhaiya "transitioned from a campus activist to a prominent figure" on India's national political stage. This was more of a deliberately hyped game.
Kanhaiya's sudden prominence arose from the JNU sedition controversy in February 2016. He was the president of the JNU Students' Union (JNUSU) representing the All India Students Federation (AISF),
Kumar was arrested on February 12, 2016. The arrest was based on sedition charges stemming from an on-campus demonstration where "anti-national" -- even glorifying terrorist Afzal was raised - slogans were allegedly raised.
After his interim bail on March 3, 2016, he clarified that he was not seeking "freedom from India," but rather "freedom within India" ... from poverty, casteism, and institutional oppression.
Kanhaiya contested as a CPI candidate in 2019 Lok Sabha polls from Begusarai in Bihar and lost to BJP's Bhola Singh.
Kanhaiya Kumar contested as a Congress candidate from the North East Delhi constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha election and lost the seat by over One lakh (1,38,778) votes against BJP's Manoj Tiwari.
There were few more. Umar Khalid is currently lodged in Tihar Jail in Delhi.
He is detained since September 2020.
Ms Shehla Rashid Shora was one such student leader. She rose to prominence whilst leading the student agitation calling for the release for Kanhaiya Kumar, Umar Khalid and others who were arrested on charges of sedition in February 2016.
She currently works as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Higher Education Department, Government of Jammu and Kashmir.
Once a vocal critic of the BJP-led government, Ms Shehla Rashid praised PM Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah in late 2023 for bringing a "bloodless" political solution, stable governance, and economic development to Jammu and Kashmir following the abrogation of Article 370.
When questioned on social media platform X about whether she was planning to join the BJP, she had dismissed the rumors, writing: "People ask, 'are you going to join BJP? Are you getting LS, RS?' Friends, We got peace! It's enough for a lifetime."
Hence, take a pause ... and you may read and write in next few years ---
....
Neha Bora goes the Shehla Rashid way. One may write Abhijeet Dipke goes Hardik Patel way .... 'whatever'.
We also know there is a generation around and they are aptly called 'Whatever generation'.
