Lok Sabha rejects Congress sponsored motion of No Confidence against Speaker Om Birla :::

Opposition scores yet another mega SELF GOAL

Jagdambika Pal of BJP who was on the chair put the Motion for Voice Vote and the ruling BJP-led NDA members strongly rejected the motion by saying and raising their hands.

The opposition members including from the Congress were on the well of the House raising anti-government slogans. A few opposition members wanted Home Minister Amit Shah to tender apology for his certain remarks during the debate.

The chair ruled that anything objectionable said by the Home Minister will not be part of record of the proceedings. The Congress member Jawed Mohammed, who was the mover of the motion, was given an opportunity to make his point. But nothing could be heard in the din.

The opposition, led by Congress, submitted a no-confidence notice in February 2026 seeking the removal of Speaker Om Birla, signed by 118 MPs.

The notice accused Kota MP Birla of acting in a partisan manner.

The Congress party had claimed that they had specific instances of partisan behaviour by the Speaker, while false allegations were levelled against the opposition members.

During the uproar in the Lok Sabha, Congress member K C Venugopal interrupted Amit Shah’s speech and questioned the focus of the discussion.

Venugopal wanted to know whether the debate was about the no-confidence motion against the Speaker or about the Leader of Opposition.

His remarks came as tensions escalated in the House during Shah’s criticism of Rahul Gandhi’s attendance record.

"There is a big coincidence ... every time there is Budget session or some important sessions and Bills; Rahul Gandhi has to go abroad. If you are in Germany and Singapore, how can you speak in Parliament and then he complaints that he was not given time by the Speaker," Shah said.

The Home Minister maintained that Om Birla should continue as the Speaker of the House till the end of the present Lok Sabha.

Shah also accused the Opposition of undermining parliamentary traditions.

Attacking Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi, the Home Minister said:

"In 17th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 51%. National average was 66%.

In 16th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 52%. National average was 80%. In 15th Lok Sabha, his attendance was 43%. National average was 76%."
