CBI Arrests a member of Arambai Tenggol (AT) involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence

(Dated: 08.06.2025)

The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a member of Arambai Tenggol (AT) at Imphal Airport today i.e. on 08.06.2025.

He was involved in various criminal activities related to Manipur violence in 2023. The information related to his arrest has been given to his family members.

It may be recalled that CBI is investigating Manipur violence cases as per the direction of Hon’ble Supreme Court of India.

The trial of the Manipur violence cases have been shifted from Manipur to Guwahati in view of the law and order situation in Manipur.

The said arrested member of Arambai Tenggol (AT) has been brought from Imphal to Guwahati and he will be produced before the competent court for police remand.

Investigation is continuing

There is an uneasy calm in and arund Manipur capital, Imphal.

An irate mob stormed the Kwakeithel Police Outpost in Imphal West, demanding the immediate release of the arrested individual.

Security forces reportedly responded by firing several rounds to disperse the crowd. During the incident, at least three people, including two media persons were injured.

Informed sources on the condition of anonymity say arrested Arambai Tenggol commander Kanan Singh is a former "suspended cop".

He might have been held due to individual case and the State Govt under President's Rule now may not be in any mood for any confrontation with the Arambai Tenggol.

Earlier a case pertained to vehicle theft and Kanan Singh was reportedly suspended. But he later joined Arambai Tenggol.

However, as Kanan Singh happened to be a key Arambai Tenggol commander, the protests have been triggered by forces who can influence such chaos in the Meitei-dominated districts.

Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla has held a few rounds of important meetings with senior civil and security officials.

Fresh protests were reported in the streets of Imphal Valley following reports of the arrests.

Rajya Sabha MP Leishemba Sanajaoba of BJP was seen at the site of the unrest, engaging with senior security officials.

In a video circulated on social media, Leishemba was heard saying, “We tried very hard to bring peace. If you do such things, how will peace come? Arrest me along with the MLA".

Lawlessness had become the order of the day during the stint of BJP chief minister N Biren Singh.

He resigned in February and at a later stage, President's Rule was imposed. An issue of great concern surfaced in January this year when Biren Singh was still in power.

There was the "kick-starting" the fashion of setting up of 'Kangaroo courts' and dispensing justice in own style and not following the standard jurisprudence.

An alleged rape victim did not go to Biren Singh's police force.

In a statement, the Koireng-faction of United National Liberation Front (UNLF) said the punishment was handed out to Khaidem Nongdam Khanganba, 30, of Imphal West district following its investigation. (as reported in 'Hindustan Times')

The 'banned militant group' on Jan 14 (Monday) said that it shot a 30-year-old man in his leg to punish him for rape of a 28-year-old woman in an Imphal hotel on January 10.

The rape survivor was staying alone in Hotel Imphal after returning to the state from Delhi.

According to official sources, the Manipur government has suspended internet and mobile data services, including VSAT and VPN, across five valley districts for five days starting from 11.45 pm on June 7th, Saturday.

The affected districts are Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching. So far things are under the purview of  the state police and civil administration.
