Critics maintain his Khalistani-appeasement politics was to 'appeal' to a segment of the Sikh vote base in Canada.
This was a highly politically motivated strategy. He also sought to embarrass PM Narendra Modi and his government in India.
However, this strategy appears to have backfired, with many Canadians viewing it as a distraction from pressing national issues.
"Woke Politics' as a term or phraseology is used to refer to anything which is perceived to be closely connected to left-wing politics.
According to Elon Musk, who popularized the term in 2021, this also includes actions or ideas believed to threaten freedom of speech.
"From the darling of global liberalism to a cautionary tale for progressive politics, Justin Trudeau's fall from grace has been as spectacular as his meteoric rise," says 'Times of India' report.
"Once hailed as the embodiment of Inclusivity and modern leadership, the man who promised "sunny ways" now finds himself the butt of international jokes and the subject of mounting calls for his resignation.
Trudeau's tenure, defined by groundbreaking progressive initiatives and cringe-worthy controversies, has left Canadians-and the world- wondering how the prince of woke politics, became a jester on the global stage."
The NDTV web story is probably more specific !!
"How Justin Trudeau's Allegations Against India Set Stage For His Downfall" -- it says.
Over the past year, several high-profile Liberal Party MPs, including Sean Casey and Ken McDonald, have publicly called for Trudeau to step down, citing dissatisfaction with his leadership. Reports suggest that more than 20 Liberal MPs have signed a pledge demanding his resignation.
The resignation of Chrystia Freeland as Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister in December marked a blow to Trudeau's government. Freeland's departure reportedly stemmed from policy disagreements, including Trudeau's handling of potential US tariffs and his economic strategy.
"Like most families, sometimes we have fights around the holidays," Trudeau said in December.
But now holidays are over and there is speculation that Justin may have to throw in the towel.
Critics often accused Trudeau of being a leader built for optics, a figure generated by a "woke Deus Ex Machina" designed solely to virtue signal.
This sentiment resonated among those who saw his governance as more performative than substantive.
From his frequent use of symbolic gestures-like painting his face black to express solidarity with minorities to his penchant for delivering moralistic homilies, Trudeau became a polarising figure.
Tensions between New Delhi and Ottawa have been simmering since Trudeau's September 2023 allegation of Indian involvement in the killing of Khalistani terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar was shot outside a Sikh temple in Canada. India dismissed the accusation as "absurd."
Trudeau's claims that India sponsors criminal activities have drawn sharp criticism both domestically and internationally.
In the subsequent fallout, India expelled six Canadian diplomats and recalled its envoy to Ottawa after Canada attempted to question Indian officials as "persons of interest" in the Nijjar case. Pro-Khalistan activities in Canada, including an attack on a Hindu temple near Toronto, further inflamed relations between the two nations.
India has consistently rejected any link to the murder of Nijjar, a designated terrorist by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), and accused Trudeau's administration of pandering to Khalistani sympathisers for political gain.
Despite multiple exchanges, including meetings at international forums like the G20 Summit, Canada has failed to provide any conclusive evidence linking India to the murder.
In 2023 at an event at Hudson Institute, a think tank, Dr S Jaishankar, India's External Affairs Minister, first raised this difference in the way Americans look at Canada and how Indians look at Canada.
“When Americans look at Canada they see something; when we in India look at Canada we see something else.
“And that’s part of the problem,” the minister said, in a veiled criticism of American officials who have been calling on India to cooperate in Canada’s investigation into allegations by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau that India was behind the killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Khalistani activist, in June.
White House and state department officials have expressed “deep concern” over Trudeau’s allegations and have said they support the investigation and want India to cooperate.
In fact, according to reports, it’s the US that provided key information to the Canadians about alleged India links to the killing as part of the Five Eyes intelligence sharing agreement that the two countries have with the UK, Australia, and New Zealand.
The era of woke politics, which peaked during Trudeau's rise, has since faced significant backlash.
Many saw Trudeau as its last staunch defender.
While Barack Obama's presidency had ushered in a wave of progressive optimism, and Joe Biden's tenure continued some of those ideals, Trudeau's unwavering commitment to these values often placed him at odds with a world increasingly fatigued by ideological battles.
His detractors argue that his leadership style prioritised grandstanding over governance.
They point to his focus on symbolic policies, like the "gender-neutral budget," as evidence of a leader disconnected from practical realities. Even his handling of Indigenous issues, once a cornerstone of his platform, was criticised for failing to deliver tangible results.
Trudeau's leadership has been marred by ethics scandals, economic challenges, and increasing alienation from key voter bases.
