Cameroon’s Vincent Aboubakar scores a stunner

Of course it's a heroic and famous victory for Cameroon !! The first African nation to defeat Brazil at the World Cup!

But it won’t be enough .... because Switzerland defeated Serbia 3-2 and secure second spot behind Brazil on goal difference.

In this group -

Brazil tops and faces South Korea --
Switzerland also has six points like Brazil, but Latin Americans have better goal average

Cameroon == finishes third while Serbia, who was almost into top 16 and was leading against Switzerland, finally loses 2-3 and so bows out of Qatar edition of the World Cup.

They rightly call it making of history in the battle of boots.

The entire South Korea squad had been standing in a circle on the pitch with some of their coaching staff in the huddle watching the knockings of the Urugay v Ghana game on a mobile phone. When one of them announced that ganme was over, the celebrations were something else.

Why Japan’s second goal against Spain was allowed to stand

The whole of the ball must cross the line for it to be out of play and VAR decided that at least some of it was still overhanging

Japan shocks Spain in a dramatic style but Germany was booted out of out of World Cup

In crucial encounter Korea humbled Portugal 2-1 to make it to the top 16. It's a dramatic entry yet again to the top 16. Of course Japan has achieved the milestone of being group champion having defeated two European and former world champions Spain and Germany.

Korea finished second in the group falling next to Portugal but outsmarted Uruguay.

Korean striker Son Heung-min ran free after a Portugal corner in added time and slipped a pass to Hwang Hee-chan who fired past Diogo Costa to spark wild celebrations and of course tears of joy among hundreds of Korean supporters in red.

They rightly call it making of history in the battle of boots.

They also say FIFA-Cup 2022 in Qatar has other records too !

Frappart ends 92-year wait for a female referee at a men's World Cup

France's Stephanie Frappart made history on Thursday when she became the first woman to take charge of a men's World Cup finals game during Costa Rica's Group E match against Germany.

Frappart, 38, led the first all-female refereeing team in a men's World Cup in the game at the Al Bayt Stadium alongside assistants Neuza Back from Brazil and Mexico's Karen Diaz.

It was yet another achievement in the illustrious career of Frappart, who began officiating youth games at the age of 13 in Herblay-sur-Seine, north-west of Paris. - (Reuters report)

Shell-shocked Spain

Two goals in three minutes just after half-time – one that was scored by the very finest of margins – shocked Spain cold, taking their metronomic rhythms and throwing them into a bin bag that was then politely disposed of.

The Europeans still qualified for the knockout stages, in second place on goal difference ahead of Germany, but if this was a deliberate attempt to choose an easier path through the draw, nobody told that to their shellshocked players.

For Japan, this was a landmark achievement against a powerful Spain.

Statistics show that Japan averaged possession of just 18% over the course of 90 minutes and they completed 175 passes to Spain’s 991.

For Japan it is their third round of 16 in the last four World Cups – but for the manner with which they did it has been spectacular. They unfortunately had lost to a 'weaker' side Costa Rica. But victories over two European powerhouses, the world champions of 2010 and 2014 is certainly no joke !!

The Japanese players remained on the pitch for a long period after the stands of the Khalifa International Stadium had begun to empty, soaking up the moment with ebullient travelling fans and a crowd of photographers.

Serbia 2-3 Switzerland

It’s all over at Stadium 974 and, despite Cameroon beating Brazil, Switzerland have done enough to secure their place in the last 16. It was a pulsating, messy and highly physical match, as expected. After a frantic first 60 minutes or so, the Swiss did well to embroil their opponents in a bruising slugging match over the last half an hour (plus another seemingly endless period of injury time). With Shaqiri on the scoresheet and a 22-man dust-up at the end, it had a bit of everything. - The Guardian
