PM's Ferozepur rally cancelled, Nadda says Congress Govt 'scuttled' it

"What has happened today is just not acceptable. It's against Panjabiyat. A secure passage for the  Prime Minister of India to address BJP's political rally in Ferozpur should have been ensured. That’s how democracy works." - Sunil Jakhar, Congress MP

"The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) taking cognisance of this serious security lapse has sought a detailed report from the state government. The State Government has also been asked to fix responsibility for this
lapse and take strict action," a spokesman of the Union Home Ministry said.

New Delhi

(When the PM’s convoy reached a flyover, the road was blocked by some protesters, and so later the rally was cancelled. It was a security lapse and MHA has asked the Punjab Govt to fix responsibility.)

"It's a complete failure of law and order in Punjab. When you can't provide smooth passage to PM of the
country and that too just 10 km from the Pakistan border, you have no right to stay in office", former Punjab
CM Capt Amarinder Singh said.

In Delhi addressing a press conference, Union Minister Smriti Irani said, "Never before in the history of
our country has a state government knowingly constructed a scenario where the PM will be brought to harm.
We know Congress hates Modi, but today they tried to harm the Prime Minister of India".

The BJP on Wednesday lashed out at the Congress government in Punjabfor allegedly trying to "scuttle" Prime Minister Narendra Modi's programmesin the state.

"Fearing a resounding defeat at the hands of the electorate, the Congress government in Punjab tried all possible tricks to scuttle the PM Narendra Modi Ji’s  programmes in the state," he tweeted.

The rally at Ferozepur was canceled due to protest by farmers as Mr Modi was to reach the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala at (Ferozepur) on road.

The Prime Minister landed at Bathinda airport on Wednesday morning and was initially scheduled to visit the National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala (Ferozepur) via helicopter.

But due to rain and poor visibility, after a 20 minutes wait, the security personneldecided about the road journey to reach the Memorial.

Accordingly Punjab DGP was also informed by the SPG. But when the PM’s convoy reached a flyover, the road was blocked by some protesters, and later the rally was cancelled.

"The state police was instructed to prevent people from attending the rally. Large number of buses were stranded because of the high-handedness of the police & connivance with protestors," Nadda wrote

in a series of tweets.

"What is extremely worrisome is that this incident was also a big security lapse as far as the PM is concerned. Protestors were given access to the Prime Minister’s route while the Punjab Chief Secrearyand DGP gave assurances to SPG that the route is clear".

He further wrote: "It is sad that the PM’s visit to launch development projects worth thousands of crores for Punjab was disrupted. But we will not let such a cheap mentality hinder progress of Punjab and will continue the effort for the development of Punjab".

Mr Nadda also said, "To make matters worse, CM Channi refused to get on the phone to either address the matter or solve it. The tactics used by the Congress government in Punjab would pain any one who believes in democratic principles".

"In doing so they did not bother that the PM was to pay tributes to Bhagat Singh & other martyrs, and lay the foundation stone for key development works. By their cheap antics,Congress Govt in Punjab has shown that they are anti-development and have no respect for freedom fighters too".

Mr Modi was on a visit to Ferozepur on Wednesday to address a rally and lay the foundation stone of multiple development projects worth over Rs 42,750 crore.

The Union Home Ministry has sought a detailed report from the state government and asked it to fix responsibility for the lapse.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi landed at Bathinda airport on Wednesday morning for the Ferozepur rally, he was scheduled to visit National Martyrs Memorial at Hussainiwala (Ferozepur) via helicopter. Due to rain and poor visibility, the PM waited for about 20 minutes for the weather to clear out.

When weather didn’t improve, it was decided that the PM would visit the National Marytrs Memorial via road, which would have taken more than 2 hours. He proceeded to travel by road after necessary confirmation of security arrangements by the Punjab Police DGP.

Around 30 km away from National Martyrs Memorial in Hussainiwala, when the PM’s convoy reached a flyover, it was found that the road was blocked by some protesters. The PM remained stuck on the flyover for 15-20 minutes. This was a major lapse in the PM’s security.
