Oh Guru: Laughter Challengers |
At the national level, AAP and Congress are now in the same league -- having powers in two states each. Congress has its own chief ministers in Rajasthan and Chhattisgarh and shares power with alliance partners in Maharashtra and Jharkhand. AAP has Delhi and now Punjab. In UP, Congress vote share came down to 2 and possibly it can win only one seat.
For Congress, Punjab Chief Ministerial face Charanjit Singh Channi, described as a 'masterstroke' card of Rahul Gandhi lost both seats he contested. Cricketer-turned-neta Navjot Singh Sidhu finished third. In Uttarakhand Harish Rawat lost.
Having lost Punjab to new entrant AAP and failing to win any of the other four states despite anti-incumbency against the ruling BJP, the grand old party is down to its worst performance. Last year, Congress failed to win Assam and Kerala, and drew zero in West Bengal.
Shashi Tharoor, a key member of G-23, already ventilates the idea of 'change' !
He stresses on "reform our organisational leadership" in a manner that will reignite those (original Congress) ideas and inspire the people.
"One thing is clear - Change is unavoidable if we need to succeed," tweets Tharoor.
Having won Punjab, AAP now signals plans to enter states like Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh - where polls are due December 2022, and possibly Haryana where it had base.
If it replaces the Congress as the challenger to BJP – this will further shrink the Congress base.

Namo in Manipur campaign |
"The results strongly vindicate BJP's pro-poor and pro-active governance. Earlier, the people could not reach govts for basic amenities such as electricity, gas and water.Several announcements and schemes were made for the poor, but benefits of such schemes never reached the poor who deserved and needed it seamlessly.
BJP understands that good governance and delivery of such schemes is very important, and we work to ensure the same," PM Modi said while addressing party workers at BJP Delhi HQ.
"The fate of 2019 polls was decided in 2017 UP elections. Similarly, fate of 2024 polls was sealed in today's results," he said.

UP Mandate seals fate of 2024, says Namo |
UP mandate seals the fate of 2024 battle, asserts PM Modi
New Delhi
It's jubilation all the way, and also a roadmap.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday asserted that perhaps the mandate delivered by the electorate of Uttar Pradesh has also sealed the fate of 2024 general elections.
"My opponents said in 2019 that the fate of 2019 general elections were decided in the 2017 UP elections itself. Now I think they will say the same that the fate of 2024 polls was sealed in today's outcome," the Prime Minister said in his victory speech to the party workers at BJP HQ. "The results strongly vindicate BJP's pro-poor and pro-active governance. Earlier, the people could not reach governments for basic amenities such as electricity, gas and water. Under different party governments, several announcements and schemes were made for the poor, but benefits of such schemes never reached the poor who deserved and needed it," he said.
"The BJP understands that good governance and delivery of such schemes is very important, and we work to ensure the same," he said.
Modi said the first-time voters have ensured the party’s victory in four states. In fact, it's asort of history that the incumbent regimes have returned to power in four states includingtough provinces such as Uttar Pradesh.
"BJP workers had promised me that Holi would begin from March 10 this year, and they have kept their promise. These workers worked 24x7 and were successful in winning the trust of the people across states," Modi said.
While the win was decisive in Uttar Pradesh with the Modi-Yogi duo leading the charge, in Uttarakhand, it was quite a pleasant surprise. The saffron party would retain power inManipur and Goa as well. .
PM said the election results highlight people's stamp of strong approval for the party's pro-poor and proactive governance model.
"Those who look at UP through the prism of caste insult the state and the people, but the electorate of the state have repeatedly voted for the politics of development four times since 2014".
He pointed out that the BJP's vote share increased in Manipur, Uttar Pradesh and Goa, despite being incumbent.
In fact, in these three states, BJP's seats have increased too, he said.
In reference to Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, the Prime Minister said Uttar Pradesh has given many prime ministers; but for the first time it has re-elected a chief minister after he had served a full term.
In Goa, Modi said, all exit polls were proven incorrect and the people have given the BJP the chance to serve them for the third consecutive term.
"We have also made history in Uttarakhand. For the first time, a party has come to power consecutive times," he said
In a tweet later, the Prime Minister congratulated the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) for its emphatic win in Punjab assembly polls.
"I would like to congratulate AAP for their victory in the Punjab elections. I assure all possible support from the Centre for Punjab’s welfare," Modi tweeted.
