A Kuki group says an 'agreement has been reached' with Tangkhul Nagas and Meitei groups ::::: Kuki group lifts blockade on one Manipur highway

The Kuki CSO Working Committee, Ukhrul (WCKCSOs-Ukhrul) has lifted its counter economic blockade and total shutdown along NH-202 after the State Govt assured it of an end to inter-district blockade.

The decision came after a meeting between a state Govt delegation led by Maipur Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam and spokesperson Thokchom Radheshyam and representatives of the WCKCSOs-Ukhrul at Shangshang on Tuesday, Aug 11.

The WCKCSOs-Ukhrul said an agreement has been reached with Tangkhul and Meitei groups concerned to end the blockade along NH-202 against the Kuki-Zos, following which it decided to withdraw its counter mea- sures with effect from 4.30 pm Tuesday.

The organisation had imposed the economic blockade on July 27, escalating it into a total shutdown from August 5, in retaliation to inter-district blockades imposed in Naga areas.

Movement of trucks along National Highway 2 has remained suspended since May 17 after the United Naga Council imposed an economic blockade to protest the abduction of six Nagas by Kuki miscreants.

The latest development is seen as 'possible' after efforts by the Manipur government to ensure the free movement of vehicles and people on national highways.

The National Highway 202 is commonly known as the Imphal-Ukhrul road.

The state government delegation told the Kuki organisation that an agreement had been reached between Naga and Meitei groups to end the selective economic blockade against Kukis on National Highway 202.

A handwritten agreement was signed between the Kuki organisation and government delegates.

The BJP Govt in the state has assured the organisation that safety and security would be ensured along the National Highway 202 and that any blockade or disturbance by any group would be prevented.

“In view of this development and the government’s assurance of free and non-discriminatory movement of essential commodities, the WCKCSOS-Ukhrul hereby lifts the counter-economic blockade and total shutdown from 4:30 pm today,” the organisation said in a statement.

Manipur is expected to go to polls by March 2027 along with UP, Punjab, Uttarakhand and Goa.
