Modi tells Trump over phone -- "No third party interventiom"

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri announced that Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a telephonic conversation with US President #DonaldTrump, which lasted approximately 35 minutes.

During the discussion, PM Modi briefed President Trump about Operation Sindoor.

PM Modi clarified that no topics related to trade were discussed in connection with Operation Sindoor.

He also reiterated that India has never accepted third-party mediation and will not accept such mediation in the future.

Furthermore, PM Modi emphasized that India will now treat acts of terrorism not as proxy actions but as acts of war.

President Trump invited PM Modi to meet during his current visit to the USA, but due to a pre-existing schedule, PM Modi was unable to accept the invitation.

Both leaders agreed to meet in the near future.

India’s goal of becoming a developed country by 2045 putting pressure on China

Direct flights are important for China from an economic perspective, because they ensure more Indian customers purchase raw materials and semi-finished products from the Chinese manufacturers.

However, the Chinese side is upset that India is negotiating with China but it is publicly criticising it for abusing its dominant position in key minerals, portraying it as an "unreliable or untrustworthy" supplier.

India, the Chinese argues, is also threatening to look for alternative sources of rare earths around the world and accelerate the development of domestic rare earth reserves so as to reduce its dependence on China.

The Chinese side noted that India was not the only one.

On the eve of the G7 Summit, the United States, the European Union, Japan, and other countries jointly called for the establishment of a "rare earth security supply chain" to reduce dependence on China. Given the global trends, there is concern in Beijing that G7 leaders could take up the issue of jointly dealing with China’s control of rare-earth matals.

Why Beijing is worried about Modi’s G7 visit

As PM Modi attends the G7 Summit, China watches closely, concerned over rare-earth diplomacy and India's balancing act between the West and Global South amid growing geopolitical unease.

As Prime Minister Narendra Modi visits Canada to attend the G7 talks, two big concerns seem to have gripped China’s strategic community.

Will G7 jointly deal with China’s rare-earth control?

Beijing's restrictions on rare earth exports in recent months disrupted global supply chains, particularly in the defence and automobile sectors. The Indian automobile industry was not immune.

Beijing has been actively negotiating the issue with various countries, including India. On June 12, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong visited New Delhi and met Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri and National Security Advisor Doval.

The key agenda reportedly was to see if a deal could be reached where India’s requirement for rare earths was exchanged for China’s requirement of resuming direct flights between New Delhi and Beijing.

To prevent the formation of a global front against China’s export control measures, the Chinese strategy has been to avoid a "one-size-fits-all" blockade for all. Chinese officials have also been negotiating individually with each nation on a case-by-case basis.

For India, the overall sentiment is that, given India's continued unfriendly attitude, it rightly "deserves the pain".

Chinese strategists further issued a warning that the G7 could do little to address India’s rare-earth crisis. On the other hand, given India's industrial strength, it will probably take a long time for Indian companies to use the rare earth materials produced independently. Therefore, India has little choice but to continue importing rare earths from China, on Chinese terms.

The other question that dominated the Chinese discourse was whether Indian diplomacy could balance the interests of the West and the Global South.

China has always been suspicious of the G7 platform. Despite the intergovernmental body actively inviting China to join it from 1999 to 2006, China has repeatedly refused, stating it would have to accept and abide by the rules set by the West and assume the international responsibilities assigned by them.

It feared that joining the G7 would mean that China would either be subjected to a second “Plaza Accord”, humiliated like Russia, or lose the trust of the vast third world or the developing world, says 'India Today'.

However, India, they noted, has chosen a different path. Foreign Minister S Jaishankar once positioned India as a "southwest country", implying it was a bridge between the West and the global South.

India, they argued, is seeking to leverage the support of the G7, a Western camp platform, to demonstrate the international community's recognition of its economic size, to strengthen its global economic voice, and thereby enhance its influence in the global South.

India’s goal of becoming a developed country by 2045 is, in a way, also putting pressure on China, whose official stance is that "it will always be a developing country". China has long complained that the West's continuous attempts to force China to become a developed country are really only a ploy, aimed at slowing down China's economic development.

"India cannot have its cake and eat it too”, argued Hu Shisheng, deputy secretary-general of the Academic Committee at the China Institutes of Contemporary International Relations, adding that “the roles it plays in the West and the global South are mutually contradictory, and India will sooner than later find itself in a rather isolated situation, where it fails to please either side”.

He cited India’s absence from Russia's Victory Day parade or its refusal to criticise the US tariff war at the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Meeting as evidence of India's policy of being a fence-sitter, “playing both sides”, thereby causing dissatisfaction among countries of the South, and diluting their agenda.

Prime Minister Modi’s C position in the group photo of the 2024 G7 summit created ripples on the Chinese internet last year. This year too, China will keep a close eye on the G7 Summit to accurately grasp the geopolitical headwinds.

Political uncertainty in Bangladesh is a serious threat to South Asia, says Pankaj Nath, senior Awami League leader in 'hiding'

"Land grabbing and atrocities against Minorities are regular and matters of great concern"

The interaction started on a very emotional note. He had just received a social media message from his younger daughter on Father's Day and the dotting kid wrote - "You have always been my safe place ... my first hero".

"What to tell you Niren Babu.... what can a man do and how much courage one can have. Kids always know how to bowl over dads," remarked Pankaj Nath, a former Bangladesh MP from Borishal-4.

As a dad, I could not agree more.

The Awami League leader was speaking from his hideout and he tried his best diplomatic hat to handle questions on trials and tribulation of his party, its leader Sheikh Hasina and his country.

To first question when did his association with the Awami League  started, Pankaj Nath said : Well, it started when I was a kid... my father was jailed in 1969 when Bangladesh was not born and we were under Pakistani dictatorship. My baba Harinarayan Nath had participated in the protest seeking Banga Bandhu's release and whem I was very young... maybe in my teens, I be became a footsoldier".

He became MP in 2014 and 2018 on Awami League ticket and in 2024 as an Independent.

"In your journalistic sense you mah say Bangladesh is passing through interesting phase; but I will say my country is going through a bad phase and our people are suffering. We showed a lot of promise under Sheikh Hasina we were doing so well in GDP etc and just a few months, we have derailed it all".

To a question with moist in his eyes and choked voice as our conversation was on video for a while, he said - "Under the situation... the US, the global community and India can do a lot..and can do everything. But what India wants to do is strictly India's decision. The contemporary setting and political uncertainty is a serious threat to the region.... and the world has to appreciate that".

"In other words I should say, the US amd Europe will have to be convinced... some of it is understood by key global players. Like the Humanitarian Corridor .... it is linked to the existential crisis of Bangladesh," Nath said.

Without spelling out further he said -  "At times our brave soldiers and senior military officers understand issues of national and regional interest better than many others".

Cautious in choosing words, it is understood he was referring cold war between interim head Muhammad Yunus and army chief Waqar uz Zaman.

Gen Zaman opposed the corridor and even called a bloody corridor.

Answering a question on what India should do, he said --- "In my humble understanding I feel India can raise voice to spread a strong message for an inclusive and credible election. Well any sensible man should do that I suppose".

Notably, Bangladesh Army Chief reached out to Russia -- India's friend.

Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar Uz Zaman visited Russia on April 7 where he reportedly met Russian Deputy Defense Minister General Fomin and Army Chief General Oleg Salyukov.

Between Yunus and Gen Zaman what's the real game ?

The former is a stooge of America but the military man maybe closer to China. His softness towards India or opppsing the Humanitarian corridor is basically tactical.

After former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was ousted on August 5, 2024, Bangladesh has been at the centre of power struggle between the interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus and the Bangladesh Army under Army Chief General Waqar Uz Zaman.

Certainly when Bangladesh Army Chief General Waqar Uz Zaman visited Russia, it caught eyeballs across the world and it also forced people to raise eyebrows.

Gen Zaman says he is opposed to the "bloody corridor" and he has started calling for elections by December 2025.

This disturbs the power equilibrium signalling Bangladesh army's discomfort with the current interim civilian arrangement. This may obviously bring us to legitimate queries - how should India react and how is China reacting.

Lt Gen Abhay Krishna (retd) sums up the paradox quite well.

"On the Rakhine corridor issue, New Delhi may actually find itself in silent alignment with Beijing. This is a case of diplomatic billiards. Supporting Waqar Zaman’s resistance to the corridor, even informally, helps India in more ways than one," he says.

I asked him to elaborate things further and he maintained:
"It keeps Bangladesh in check, prevents a US beachhead and may even open the door for India to engage directly with groups like the Arakan Army or the Chin rebels".

He has a point. The engagement with Arakans is perhaps already happening quietly in Mizoram.

It is understood that New Delhi has built goodwill by offering non-lethal support and diplomacy rather than taking sides in the broader Myanmar conflict.

Israel Now a ‘Disobedient’ Policeman for Trump

Israel Now a ‘Disobedient’ Policeman for Trump

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned Israel that it “must expect severe punishment” following the “crime” of attacking Iran and killing several top-level military commanders and six nuclear scientists

Deadly conflict on cards. It’s almost a state of global alarm. Reports in Irani media claim at least six nuclear scientists were killed by Israeli strikes.

Tehran’s anguish is understandable. On the question of American hands behind the strikes, ‘Tehran Times’ says while the U.S. hasn’t officially admitted to cooperating with Israel, there are signs of involvement—such as American refuelling tankers operating near Iran 24 hours before the strike — along with unofficial reports suggesting U.S.-Israeli coordination.

The US has tried to wash off its hands in initial knee-jerk reaction.

“Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defence,” said Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei has warned Israel that it “must expect severe punishment” following the “crime” of attacking Iran and killing several top-level military commanders and six nuclear scientists.

The escalating tension will be a matter of deep concern at the global stage especially given the timing factor. In the words of Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, his government was “alarmed”.

“We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel,” Indian government said in a statement.

“We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites. India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support,” the foreign ministry said.

The Israeli ‘Operation Rising Lion’ comes amid rising tensions between Israel and Iran over the latter's progressing work on its nuclear program.

Following the strikes, Israel is anticipating a retaliation from Iran and said it was declaring a state of emergency.

Israel's defence minister Israel Katz said in a statement after the strikes, “Following the pre-emptive strike by the State of Israel against Iran, a missile and UAV (drone) attack against the State of Israel and its civilian population is expected in the immediate timeframe.”

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said that his country's strikes on Iran are aimed at hurting its nuclear infrastructure, its ballistic missile factories and many of its military capabilities. "We are at a decisive moment in Israel's history... This operation will continue for as many days as it takes to remove this threat," Netanyahu said in a video message.

During the strikes, Iran's Revolutionary Guards chief Hossein Salami was killed, reported the local media.

There are more ways than one to look at the strikes. While everyone is blaming Israel for escalating the global tension; many also believe the American blessings ought to be behind the move. They might see it as a synthesis of battle fields and the sports of billiards.

Lt Gen Abhay Krishna (Retd), who commanded as many as three Army Commands in India from South Western to Central to Eastern, says: “The situation highlights complex power dynamics, where nations may be working together or separately to achieve their objectives,

While many blame Israel for escalating global tensions, others believe the US might be backing the move. This is a new policeman game. But the cop always has its command somewhere. In the changing situation, the US realises there are limits to its power. If it does not go along with a view held by a majority of major powers; it might have to go along with them unwillingly. But it can always ask its cop to do the job. This perspective suggests a strategic alignment between the US and Israel”.

Of course this means the US provides implicit support or "blessings" for Israel's actions.

The global concern is understandable.

Iran is a key nation in the Gulf region and if the conflict transforms into a full-fledged war or even ‘partial’; it will make a big difference to the life of other countries.

From the Indian point of view; a major area of concern will be the safety and security of the diaspora.

“Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories,” said Indian foreign ministry.

The White House is publicly separating itself from the military action, says BBC report but it also hastens to add that Trump is trying to signal they mean to stay out of this fight for the moment.

Of course there was a similar dynamic last year when Israel widened the conflict in the region. In the hours before Thursday's attacks, US officials were briefing that there would be ‘no American support’ in the event of Israeli action.

But Iran claims there was refuelling support from Americans. And hence the apprehension of things getting heightened is more.

Though US Secretary of State Rubio has sought to keep US at a safe distance from the Israeli decision – though Israelis indicate other stories; the statement for Rubio had a line of warning –"Let me be clear: Iran should not target US. interests or personnel."

There are chances that when Iran retaliates, it could also strike at a few American bases and military personnel.

Iranian authorities have remained defiant amid concerns that Israel could launch an attack on Iran as the global nuclear watchdog adopts another Western-led censure resolution.

Oman was scheduled to host a sixth round of talks on Sunday between Iran and the United States over Tehran’s nuclear programme. But Israel indicated it was “ready” to attack Iran even without military backing from Washington.

Iran is now planning a crushing response. Iran’s foreign minister Abbas Araghchi has written a letter to the United Nations saying Israel as the most brutal terrorist regime has crossed all red lines and the international community must not allow its strike on Iran go unpunished.

Araghchi demanded an immediate session of the United Nations Security Council as a response to this “open invasion”. And he asserted that Iran will give a crushing response to Israel.

How Trump has Again Failed ?

On the US complicity, experts suggest it was unlikely that Netanyahu would have launched the strike if he was explicitly given a red light by the Trump administration.

“There’s clearly some confusion in the US position right now … and some differences between the United States position and Israel’s position,” said William Wechsler, the senior director of the Rafik Hariri Center & Middle East programs at the Atlantic Council.

Global analysts say the US has to be blamed for the chaotic situation. One, it might have allowed Israel with such adventurism. Secondly, if it did not, it shows Trump is unable to control Netanyahu anymore.

Thirdly and more importantly, the American decision to retreat from the region, stemming from Trump’s decision to abandon the Iranian nuclear deal called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action under the first Trump administration has led to a greater likelihood of conflict in the region.

The attack was “clearly intended to scuttle the Trump administration’s negotiations with Iran,” said Senator Chris Murphy (as reported in The Guardian).

“This is a disaster of Trump and Netanyahu’s own making," he said.

Ex Gujarat CM Rupani is no more .... Long Live Vijay Rupani

"I took the government to the doorstep of flood-affected people. I camped there for five days" - Late Vijay Rupani as CM in 2017.

Vijay Rupani is no more. But many in Gujarat BJP would love to scream - Long Live Vijay Rupani.

The soft spoken former Chief Minister expired in the killer air crash in Ahmedabad that has claimed 270 lives.

The state of Gujarat will be observing one day state mourning on Monday, June 16.

We in journalists in Delhi knew him as a no non-sense man and he always made his point without being harsh.

Some of us met him in August 2017 in his Gandhinagar office chamber. The conversation started with a surprise remark from him. "All of you ask me tough and frank questions and I will reply frankly. Then all of you can say it is exclusive interview".

We had no option and we lauhhed out. But we were laughing at ourselves too. With a mystique smile he was looking at us very cool.

Rupani became Chief Minister aftermath Patidar agitation and it was his cool and a systematic approach that the major socio political agitation against Narendra Modi's Lotus party was handled.

He had a soothing touch and slowly the crisis was blown over. During the conversation whem I asked him if he had "any message for Muslims when Gujarat was actually a Hindu laboratory"; he replied -- "Only media see things with such prism. For a BJP government, the state is not a laboratory ... its karma bhoomi for inclusive governance. And I will tell you that the BJP has been getting support of all sections of society. Muslims in large numbers will vote for BJP in the upcoming Assembly elections ( Dec 2017) especially after the Supreme Court ruled against Triple Talaq. Muslim women are with the  vote f BJP."

That was a matured manner of replying, I told my colleagues.

To a question on Hardik Patel-led agitation tjat actually forced BJP to replace Anandiben Patel as the chief Minister, Late Rupani had said -

"We held discussions with Patidar leaders and explained to them citing judicial orders that there can’t be more than 50 per cent reservation in  jobs and education. We came up with Mukhyamantri Swawlamban Yojna, under which the state government will bear half the cost of education in self-financed colleges for those who got marks between the cut off for reserved and general category."

Truly this was another beauty and a smart move to end the agitation gradually.

On Congress split too, Rupani could not be cornered. His response was near classic --

"It was not the BJP which broke the Congress in Gujarat. I took the government to the doorstep of flood-affected people. I camped there for five days

Congress and its government at the Centre earlier had been creating obstacles for the development of Gujarat, which alienated its leaders against the party.

The Sardar Sarovar dam, the lifeline of the people of the state for drinking water and irrigation, was completed only after Modi became Prime Minister and BJP came to power in Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan and Gujarat. Therefore, the 14 Congress MLAs quit their party out of sheer frustration with their high command.

Replying to a question on his party's slogan of ‘Garje Gujarat' (roaring Gujarat) Rupani had said, "Garje means singhnaad (roar) and we used this slogan for development. We gave this slogan because we want Gujarat to develop in a confident manner."

He said Gujarat had suffered during the 10-year rule of the Congress-led UPA and the BJP was seeking to bring about accelerated development of the state.

"It happened for the first time that the state government filled the vacancies of over 80,000 in several government departments. About 18,000 people were selected in police jobs. And there was complete transparency in giving the job."

Ends

Well death is the ultimate truth and it is sad that Rupani ji has passed onto a different world.

As mortals, we may bow our head in tribute to the simple man but also a leader with concern for people and especially the marginalised sections.

Pradyot should not go IPFT way and BJP should not go the Left way : Tripura Students' Fed. leader Hamalu Jamatia

"The Tipra Motha, regional party headed by Prodyot Bikram Manikya Deb Barma, should make up its mind. It should not do the same mistake as IPFT which was BJP ally between 2018 and 2023. If BJP does not deliver and fail to keep its promises made to tribals, our Maharaja should walk out," commented general secretary Tripura Students Federation (TSF) Hamalu Jamatia.

In an interview with this blogger at Agartala, Jamatia maintained that the Lotus party will have to do lot of explanation during fast approaching 2028 assembly elections in Tripura.

"Forget governance issues and non performance of ministers and MLAs. The principal election issue in 2028 in our state will be infllux... The isssue of illigal immigration has various layers.. Hindu Bengalis, Muslim Bengalis and Buddhist Chakmas are pouring in and everybody feels nothing much is done," he said.

"Influx issue is not only harmful for indigenous tribals.... It is equally dangerous phenomenon for Bengali Hindus. Their share of the cake in government jobs will go. Worse for native tribals, Chakmas are taking away from tribal quotas also. And amid all that BJP governments both at Agartala and in New Delhi are not doing much," he said.

Answering to a specific question, he said : "In the context of what I have told you... therefore we think projecting Mr Prodyot as chief ministerial face will work definitely. He is a genuine political alternative as there is already a vaccum in leadership in our state".

Jamatia also claimed an electricity bill has surfaced that shows a senior politician's father paid power bill in Bangladesh. "Moreover, it is said even former Chief Minister Biplap Deb's mother had arrived Tripura only in 1971 from across the border".

Dwelling in details on various facets of tribal evolution in Tripura, he said the native tribals do not have much to cherish about the achievements. "Late Indira Gandhi had given autonomous district council in 1979 and later there was a peace agreement with TNV in 1988....what did we get after so many years".

Jamatia, however said -- "From tribal point of view, the BJP is far better than the Left... The communists were grossly anti tribals. That's why CPI-M imposed AFSPA and tribals suffer".

"In general sense, I can say the BJP should not follow the Left line and at the same time Tipra Motha should not follow the IPFT line," he said.

Of course in 2024 the Tripura Peace Accord was  signed on 4 September 2024, between the Government of India, the Government of Tripura and the insurgent groups NLFT and ATTF, thus ending the 34 year old Insurgency in Tripura.

To another question, he said the Left may go the West Bengal way in Tripura as well. By this statement, he meant the communists support base will further nosedive.

In 2021 assembly election in West Bengal not a single nominee from the Left parties could enter assembly.

Boeing faultline responsible for Ahmedabad aircrash ?

"By jumping up and down, you’re deforming parts so that the holes align temporarily … and that’s not how you build an airplane.”

****

‘I want to prevent crashes’: Boeing whistleblower Sam Salehpour warned about ‘catastrophic’ event a year ago

In 2024, Boeing engineer Sam Salehpour's concerns about the 787 Dreamliner jet's design had made US federal authorities launch an investigation into the company.

The Air India plane that crashed in Ahmedabad minutes after takeoff was a Boeing 787 Dreamliner – a model that whistleblowers had already been expressing concerns about.

He had alleged last year that Boeing used ‘shortcuts’ in the making of the aircraft model's fuselage.

A year later, an ill-fated Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft of Air India crashed in Ahmedabad, taking away lives of 241 people on board and around 30 others.

The cause of the plane crash, however, has not been identified yet as authorities continue to investigate the deadly accident.

In his formal complaint to the Federal Aviation Administration, which was made public in April 2024, Sam Salehpour had alleged that the crews that assembled the Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft failed to properly fill small gaps as they joined separately manufactured parts of the fuselage.

While Boeing claimed its 787 aircraft to have 50-year lifespan, this mistake could put more wear on the plane, he alleged. It would mean that the aircraft's lifespan would be shortened, resulting in ‘catastrophic events’, Salehpour's lawyers had said.

The Air India plane that crashed on Thursday was operating for 11 years.

“I am doing this not because I want Boeing to fail, but because I want it to succeed and prevent crashes from happening,” Salehpour had told reporters last year.

“The truth is Boeing can’t keep going the way it is. It needs to do a little bit better, I think,” he added.

The claims that Salehpour had made last year were not entirely new and the FAA had paused Boeing from delivering the Dreamliner aircraft for nearly two years starting 2021 while it was investigating possible shortcomings.

Boeing had claimed it “incorporated the join inspection and verification activity” into its production system.

But Salehpour's attorneys said that the FAA was surprised to see through his complaint that the shortcomings were still an issue.

Ends

“I literally saw people jumping on the pieces of the airplane to get them to align,” Salehpour said.

“By jumping up and down, you’re deforming parts so that the holes align temporarily … and that’s not how you build an airplane.”

Yunus is with US,, Bangladesh army chief Waqar may prefer China ... where does India stand ?

India may be doing its own calculations. But New Delhi's hands might be full.

But it goes without stating that things are pretty serious in the eastern front.

We may still have to wait for a few weeks or months for real Bad news for Anti-India Muhammad Yunus.

Waqar Uz Zaman visited Russia on April 7 where he reportedly met Russian Deputy Defense Minister General Fomin, Army Chief General Oleg Salyukov, as well as representatives of defense firms Rostec, Rosoboronexport and Rosatom.

Media reports noted that the discussions could have been around possibilities of cooperation in the defense sector.

However, experts have been quoted as saying by many reports that the visit of the Bangladesh Army Chief might have been placed to indicate that the Bangladesh Army is ready to lead Bangladesh.

He could be keen to replace the interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus. But he does not want to go for the kill without good preparations.

He also does not want to be seen as strictly an anti American protagonist.

There is an inherent difference in the nature of the interim government of Bangladesh led by Muhammad Yunus and the Bangladesh Army.

But Zaman is not strictly an anti-fundamentalist.

Speculation is rife that Bangladesh Army led by Army Chief General Waqar Uz Zaman may be planning a coup against the Yunus.

But he may need international backing. Will Moscow oblige him?

China is not altogether against the idea and India would not mind ouster of Yunus. So, RIC bloc may prefer Waqar as of now. This is pretty good bargain.

But New Delhi will have to do more.

Yunus is behaving undiplomatic and cheap.

Blogger

It was unbecoming on the part of Yunus to tell the world on what transpired between him and Narendra Modi.

This displays bad diplomacy and also his desperation. He simply wants to continue in office. The perks are too tempting and also that he has to please his masters.

What is the new emerging situation ?

"The Rakhine Corridor is quietly turning into one of the most consequential geopolitical flashpoints in our region right now.

It’s being pitched as a humanitarian lifeline to northern Rakhine, which is now largely under the control of the Arakan Army. But behind the smokescreen of aid, what’s really at stake is strategic access and a looming great power contest between the US and China, with Bangladesh caught squarely in the middle," says Lt Gen Abhay Krishna (Retd).

Of course, the Americans are pushing for the corridor under humanitarian pretexts.

A keen observer of strategic things having served as Army Commander of three regions Eastern Command, South Western Command and Central Command, General Krishna says:

"Obviously the US is securing influence and possibly even a semi-permanent presence near the Bay of Bengal. Muhammad Yunus, heading the interim civilian government in Bangladesh, has signalled openness to the corridor under Western pressure, but this has put him at odds with the Bangladesh Army, particularly General Waqar-uz-Zaman".

The typical interesting part of Gen Krishna's analysis is that:

"Gen Zaman sees through it. He’s drawing parallels with what happened to Pakistan in the 1980s when, under the guise of fighting the Soviets, the country became a staging ground for foreign interests. The result was long-term instability, foreign interference and blowback that reshaped Pakistan’s politics forever."

We may understand that way Gen Zaman is showing "maturity" and he doesn’t want Bangladesh to be the "next lab rat".

Zaman says he is opposed to the "bloody corridor" and he has started calling for elections by December 2025.

World War 3 ( III) is here .. Israel has tacit support from US, France and Germany -- But Trump gets reality check ... He is not a great Deal Maker.

Donald Trump was very proud even a few months back. He thought he was a great deal maker and this capability would help him ensure bring an end to Russia-Ukraine war.

This has not happened. Next came his conviction pushed by ego that he would be able to control Iran.

TEHRAN has given him a royal snub.

Instead of Trump's claim that America is not interested in war; today trouble areas have jncreased manifold.

As it is Israel had problems with Gaza. But now this Iran episode would change both the short term and long term impacts.

Iran is determined to use missiles against Israel. On the other hand, Benjamin Netanyahu is also convinced that his country should continue the fight.

Hence, expert Attila Somfalvi - based in Tel Aviv- says the war is far from over.

Israel at the moment appears to have managed the support from the US, France and Germany. Well due to more reasons than one Israel has the right to defend itself.

In that case, India's stance today got endorsed by Israel directly and indirectly by Trump-ruled America.

PM Narendra Modi has changed many things about India's foreign policy despite being a self styled expert like Nehru and doctrine writer like I K Gujral.

Modi came to Delhi as a former CM of Gujarat and who was perceived as a mofusil. But he proved prophets of doom wrong.

He did espouse Hindu nationalist causes.

The export of ancient Hindu culture became the order of the day and Yoga and Diwali are known to millions more people in the globe than the figure of 2013 or early 2014.

In India he challenged distorted history writers and erased "Islamic history". EVEN the inauguration of Hindu temples abroad was widely accepted.

That has also changed the nature of India’s diaspora, with far-reaching implications. Indians and people of Indian descent overseas make up the largest diaspora of any country in the world, and they have long helped champion policies favorable to New Delhi.

Most notably, in the 2000s, after India faced sanctions for its nuclear tests, diaspora groups lobbied to build global legitimacy for India as a nuclear power. That resulted in the landmark nuclear deal between India and the United States and pushed countries like Australia to reconsider nuclear export bans.

But the diaspora’s cohesiveness as a lobby for New Delhi’s interests is now in doubt.

According to a 2020 survey of Indian Americans by the Washington-based Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, a sizable 69 percent of Hindus in the U.S. approved of Modi’s performance as prime minister, but only 20 percent of Muslims and 34 percent of Christians did; _ it has been stated by a school of thought.

Modi has envisaged India as an independent pole in a multipolar world.

Its a key US friend but it has not given up on Russia.

But Modi has also retained India’s long-standing policy of neutrality and non-alignment.

India's 1971 War ::::

For India, the 1971 war was a huge psychological victory, almost a chiliastic event: it was said poetically that for the first time in a thousand years, the Hindus had defeated the Muslims.

That is not historically true, as Hindu armies defeated the Muslims mands many times. Nonetheless, that is the way Indians felt, and still feel.

Equally important, the Indian Army performed at a high with level of skill and efficiency never seen before in the nation's three into previous wars since Independence 1947-48 in Kashmir, 1962 against China and 1965 against Pakistan.

A major problem in researching and writing about the Indo-Pakistan War of 1971 is that there is not much primary and authoritative information available, while second-hand reference materials are often too costly for an amateur historian to acquire: out-of-print Pakistani books, for example, usually sell for US$100 and more. Even if acquirable, different books disagree with each other in regards of details and none is based on official documentation.

Indeed, both the Indians and the Pakistanis have destroyed their related records; the Pakistanis before surrendering, and the Indians a few years after the war. Moreover, the mass of second-hand reference materials are one-sided. As a result, only t enough material is available to generalise, and much of the work presented here is, undoubtedly, simplified - due to attempts to make a coherent story.

Another issue is that many books and articles were written well after the war, and memories are fading.

This is of particular importance considering that neither India nor Pakistan at that time had an open culture about military matters, and criticism of military affairs remains a de-facto taboo in both countries until this very day. The official Indian history of the 1971 war was never authorised, despite treading softly on things that were obviously done wrong, or could have been done better, says a news magazine on Indo-Pakistan conflict.

Miscs : Whats News ... Death toll in air crash reach 270 :: Iran"s Nuke facility hit hard by Israelis

The Ahmedabad Fire and Emergency Service (AFES) has recovered some human body parts as well as a corpse in the past 24 hours from the plane crash site in the Meghaninagar area, where the medical hostel is located.

The process of identifying victims by matching the DNA samples is currently underway, and the bodies will be handed over to their relatives once the process is complete.

The ill-fated flight carried 242 people - 230 passengers, two pilots and 10 crew members - and killed 241 of them and left just one survivor, a British national of Indian-origin, who is hospitalised

Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, in his first briefing after the Air India flight crash in Ahmedabad on Thursday, said that the black box data from the ill-fated aircraft is being decoded, while multiple agencies and high-level panels are conducting an extensive probe into the incident. The black box data is expected to provide crucial information about the cause of the crash.

The death toll in Thursday's tragic Air India plane crash in Ahmedabad rose to 270 as those injured on the ground succumbed to their injuries, according to doctors.

Flight AI 171, which was headed to London's Gatwick airport, crashed into the BJ Medical hostel and its canteen complex, minutes after taking off from the Ahmedabad airport on Thursday afternoon. The authorities had earlier pegged the death toll at 265.

General Gholamreza Mehrabi, deputy head of intelligence of the armed forces general staff, and General Mehdi Rabbani, deputy head of operations, were killed, according to state media. Iran also confirmed that its Fordo nuclear facility sustained limited damage following recent Israeli strikes, semi-official ISNA news agency said.

"There has been limited damage to some areas at the Fordow enrichment site. We had already moved a significant part of the equipment and materials out, and there was no extensive damage and there are no contamination concerns," state atomic energy agency spokesperson Behrouz Kamalvandi said.

Delay in Solution to Naga problem is linked to "hurting" Nagaland state's soul and also its pocket !! :::: Joblessness will take a dangerous dimension

As far as Naga peace talks is concerned, it may be right time to reflect on how things progressed in 2019. The Govt of India looked committed and ready for the kill.

In Kashmir, the controversial Article 370 was abrogated on August 5th. In both the Houses of Parliament - Home Minister Amit Shah made spirited statements. But as the much debated Article was abrogated in the north; the centre had moved towards north east.

R N Ravi, the then peace interlocutor and Nagaland Governor, was also doing his part with the blessings of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and in close coordination with NSA Ajit Doval. However, things got stalled and then almost derailed.

R N Ravi with veteran Naga leader S C Jamir

As one reflects on these facts, the other day I was reminded by a social activist in Nagaland on how things had turned 'extremely favourable' for a Solution at the earliest.

The social activist recalls that Ravi had convened a mammoth meeting of tribal bodies, church leaders and civil society. The response was overwhelming as everyone in Nagaland has been clamouring for the final Peace pact and Solution to the vexed  Naga political problem.

Taking advantage of the near consensus approach and enthusiasm among all sections of the society; Ravi had requested a church leader and a tribal community leader to read "loud" the Framework Agreement inked on Aug 3, 2015.

My social activist friend says Ravi had done so almost as a surprise act and told the large gathering that "all confusion" about the August 3rd document of 2015 should come to rest by now.

He also said both the initial pacts - the Framework Agreement signed in presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi with NSCN-IM and later the Agreed Position signed in 2017 with NNPGs would finally contribute to bring Solution to the Naga issue.

"There was cheer and applause all around.... every Naga was happier that day. We thought we will achieve it at last," recalls the social activist.

Why you do not want to be quoted, I asked my friend. And his response was -

"Six years have gone since 2019. A boy of 14 year-old then is today 20 years. He may listen to me but he has his own mind and he may not listen to me also. Money is the great anarchist in today's world. My voice will not make much sense".

Modi appreciating Nagaland fruit at Assam Rifles unit at Medzhiphema

For a moment I thought, my friend's almost helpless looking voice made a lot of sense.

Talking objectively, one can say if Nagaland state's 'soul' has been actually hurt by constant delay tactics for the Solution and derailing the entire peace process; the state's pocket too was being hurt by not getting the works done on ground on time.

Roads still remain very bad and hence despite being in power since 2018, the BJP in Nagaland will not have anything major to claim in terms of infrastructure.

There has also been failure to compete successfully with other states in the region. Manipur was doing far better before May 2023. Assam is not only away ahead, investors such a Mukesh Ambani and Gautam Adani would be pumping in much more in months and years to come.

There's another serious factor vis-a-vis delaying the Solution.

The extortion racket has hit commoners and business people worst. Those who had invested in the past are no longer willing to cough out more of their hard and risk-hit earned money. One local (and also non-local) Congress leader Rajesh Seth says he is unable to face his children when it comes to the safety and security of the younger lots.

If such people go away-- the joblessness will take ominous dimension.

But none seems to understand the gravity of the situation. The policy makers are trusting the wrong customer for whatever reasons. Press the panic button, it's must.

Sometimes far from New Delhi means far from the heart.

Israel says attacks on nuclear sites, personnel aim to ‘roll back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival’

More than 200 Israeli Air Force fighter jets hit more than 100 nuclear, military and infrastructure targets across Iran, including its main nuclear facility in Natanz.

Iranian leaders are likely to believe that the Trump administration was not just aware of these strikes in advance, but covertly endorsed them.

Two key Iranian nuclear scientists are among six scientists killed in Israeli strikes on sites in Iran on Friday.

Israel says Iran launched 100 drones towards its territory after attack on Iranian nuclear sites and killing of military leaders.

The United States is no stranger to targeting Iranian interests and personnel. Recall the case of the January 2020 US assassination by drone strike of Qassem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, which simply further enshrined imperial double standards.

The Israeli army said it had damaged the Natanz uranium enrichment site’s underground structures, including a multistorey enrichment hall with centrifuges, electrical rooms and additional supporting infrastructure.

It added that “vital infrastructure at the site that allows for its continuous functioning and the continued advancement of the Iranian regime’s project to obtain nuclear weapons was attacked”.

This came just a day after United States President Donald Trump said his administration was “fairly close to a pretty good agreement” with Iran and that military action “could blow it” and lead to a “massive conflict”.

On Thursday, the United Nations nuclear watchdog, the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), declared that Iran had not complied with its nonproliferation obligations for the first time in almost 20 years. Tehran maintains that its nuclear programme focuses on peaceful purposes and is not developing weapons.

The spokesperson for Iran’s armed forces, Abolfazl Shekarchi, warned that Israel would pay a “heavy price” for its attacks, which also killed three senior military figures, including Mohammad Bagheri, the country’s highest-ranking official.

In total, six Iranian scientists have been killed in the Israeli strikes.

Iran’s Tasnim news agency described two of the victims, Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi and Fereydoun Abbasi, as “major nuclear scientists”.

Tehranchi, a theoretical physicist, was the president of the Islamic Azad University of Iran. He was added to the US Department’s Entity List of actors “acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests” in March 2020.

The building housing the residence of Tehranchi and several other Iranian scientists was severely damaged in Friday morning’s attacks, reports aljazeera.com.

Abbasi was a former head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran and a former member of the Iranian parliament. He held a PhD in nuclear physics and had conducted nuclear research at the defence ministry.

In 2010, Abbasi survived twin blasts in Tehran that killed fellow nuclear scientist Majid Shahriari. Iran blamed Israel for the incident, although Israel neither confirmed nor denied the assassination, the report says.

It remains to be seen if Iran decides to attack US military sites in the Middle East, but its leaders are likely to believe that the Trump administration was not just aware of these strikes in advance, but covertly endorsed them.

The US said it had not been involved in the attacks, but Tehran pointed both to Israeli officials stating the attack had been completely coordinated with the US, and that the Israeli air force is entirely dependent on US supplies.

Logically speaking, this would not be the first time the US government is accused of placing Israel’s policy objectives ahead of its own.

The billions upon billions of dollars in lethal aid that Republican and Democratic administrations alike have showered upon Israel can scarcely be said to benefit the average US citizen, who would certainly be better off if said billions were invested in affordable housing or healthcare options in the US itself.

"A disaster of Trump and Netanyahu’s own making" ::::::: Israel strikes Iran ::: India cautious in response .. says "We are monitoring evolving situation, including reports on attacks on nuclear sites"

MEA statement in New Delhi

"We are deeply concerned at the recent developments between Iran and Israel.

We are closely monitoring the evolving situation, including reports related to attacks on nuclear sites. India urges both sides to avoid any escalatory steps. Existing channels of dialogue and diplomacy should be utilised to work towards a de-escalation of the situation and resolving underlying issues. India enjoys close and friendly relations with both the countries and stands ready to extend all possible support.

Our Missions in both countries are in contact with the Indian community. All Indian nationals in the region are advised to exercise caution, stay safe and follow local security advisories" - the statement said.

Critics have said the US decision to retreat from the region, stemming from Trump’s decision to abandon the Iranian nuclear deal called the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action under the first Trump administration has led to a greater likelihood of conflict in the region.

The attack was “clearly intended to scuttle the Trump administration’s negotiations with Iran,” said Senator Chris Murphy of Connecticut, and is “further evidence of how little respect world powers – including our own allies – have for President Trump”.

“This is a disaster of Trump and Netanyahu’s own making, and now the region risks spiraling toward a new, deadly conflict,” he added.

Lt Gen Abhay Krishna (Retd)

There are more ways than one to look at the strikes. While everyone is blaming Israel for escalating the global tension; many also believe the American blessings ought to be behind the move. They might see it as a synthesis of battle fields and the sports of billiards.

Lt Gen Abhay Krishna (Retd), who commanded as many as three Army Commands in India from South Western to Central to Eastern, says: “The situation highlights complex power dynamics, where nations may be working together or separately to achieve their objectives ...

While many blame Israel for escalating global tensions, others believe the US might be backing the move. This is a new policeman game. But the cop always has its command somewhere".

Israel launches strikes on Iran: what we know so far ::::: US washed off its hands ... "Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes"

Israel has launched an attack on Iran aimed at “dozens” of targets, including its nuclear facilities.

Secretary of state Marco Rubio said the US was not involved in the strikes.

“Tonight, Israel took unilateral action against Iran. We are not involved in strikes against Iran and our top priority is protecting American forces in the region. Israel advised us that they believe this action was necessary for its self-defence.”

Iran state media said five people had been killed and 20 wounded.

World leaders have voiced concern over the strikes. New Zealand’s prime minister, Christopher Luxon, said that the Israeli airstrikes on Iran was a “really unwelcome development”. Australia’s foreign minister, Penny Wong, said the government was “alarmed”.

Israel’s prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, said the attack, dubbed Rising Lion, would take “many days” and was aimed at “rolling back the Iranian threat to Israel’s very survival”. He suggested the operation could be long and difficult, saying “Israeli citizens may have to remain in sheltered areas for lengthy periods of time.”

Netanyahu said one target was the Natanz nuclear facility, a key site for uranium enrichment.

The Israeli defence minister, Israel Katz, announced a “special situation” in Israel after the country launched the strikes and said Israel expected retaliation.

Tel Aviv’s Ben Gurion Airport was closed until further notice, and Israel’s air defence units stood at high alert.

Revolutionary Guards commander Hossein Salami has been killed in the strikes and the unit’s headquarters in Tehran had been hit. The Revolutionary Guards said Israel will pay a heavy price for its attack.

State TV is reporting that nuclear scientists Fereydoun Abbasi and Mohammad Mehdi Tehranchi were also killed.

Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei says Israel will receive a harsh punishment after its attack on Iran early on Friday. He confirmed that several commanders and scientists were killed in the attacks – and warned that Israel had “prepared a bitter fate for itself.”

Iran’s foreign ministry said the US – as Israel’s main supporter - will be held responsible for the consequences of “Israel’s adventurism.” In a statement, the ministry said the Israeli attack “exposes global security to unprecedented threat” and calls on the international community to condemn it.

Israel’s ambassador to the United Nations has said Israel has an ongoing dialogue with the United States but its determination to strike Iran was an independent Israeli decision.

Donald Trump has said that Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb and that the United States was hoping to get back to the negotiating table, in an interview with a Fox News following the start of Israeli airstrikes on Iran. “Iran cannot have a nuclear bomb and we are hoping to get back to the negotiating table. We will see. There are several people in leadership that will not be coming back,” Fox News reporter Jennifer Griffin quoted Trump as saying in a post on X.

For now, the White House is – publicly – separating itself from the military action, trying to signal they mean to stay out of this fight for the moment. We saw a similar dynamic last year when Israel widened the conflict in the region, while the US attempted to contain the fallout, help defend Israel, but crucially not to get dragged in itself.

In the hours before Thursday's attacks, US officials were briefing that there would be no American support in the event of Israeli action, even going as far as to say they would not help with any aerial refuelling.
