Who will be new BJP national president ?
The question could be mere academic. As whoever takes the mantle of party chief, he or she will have to sail along side PM Narendra Modi and two other chief power centres Amit Shah and Yogi Adityanath.
The fourth key element is of course the RSS and its chief Mohan Bhagwat.
As now some names are definitely being considered. Reportedly three former chief ministers' names came for discussions in crucial circles.
Union Power Minister Manohor Lal Khattar is one of them. He was chief minister of Haryana and his biggest asset is his 'qualification' as a close friend of PM Narendra Modi. His selection as Chief Minister of Haryana in 2014 was also quite surprising.
Second man in this category is former Jharkhand CM - Raghubar Das.
Born 3rd May 1955, he also served as the 26th Governor of Odisha since 2023 until 2024. He was twice made the President of BJP Jharkhand.
He is an OBC and could this aspect turn a key pointer in his favour.
Ragubhar Das |
Former Assam and the presesent Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal is also being considered for the key post reportedly. But he does not have the RSS connections. He is a turn-coat leader from the AGP school of politics.
But he could have the Sanghparivar's backing as he had spearheaded a movement and later a successful legal fight against (on) the issue of Bangladeshi influx in Assam vis-a-vis once controversial IMDT Act.
In 2005, allowing a writ petition filed by then Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) MP Sarbananda Sonowal, a three-judge Bench comprising Chief Justice RC Lahoti and justices GP Mathur and P K Balasubramnyan, had unanimously declared the 1983 Illegal Migrants (Determination by Tribunal) IMDT Act and rules framed in 1984 as being ultra vires of the Constitution.
Sonowal had contended that IMDT Act was only encouraging votebank politics (of Congress) without addressing the problem of illegal migrants, the then Congress government in Assam had supported the law.
Sonowal's elevation to such a top post could ensure a near sweep for the BJP in Upper Assam in 2026 assembly polls. Sonowal hails from Kachari tribe and that way the Lotus party can get its first ST party chief.
Khattar and Modi : Punjabi Khatri ... also a key angle !! |
The Khatris are influential within the Sikh community. In 2027 assembly polls, the BJP will be eyeing big in Punjab too.
However, PM Modi and those involved/engaged in the churning are also examining other factors including the need to woo women and south Indian voters.
On this the names such as Smriti Irani (as women and PM's confidant) also came up.
But there are a few other stake holders as well such as Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman (woman and Tamil Nadu face) and also
-- K. Annamalai.
A former IPS officer of 2011 batch Karnataka cadre; he is also the state president of BJP Tamil Nadu.
The 37-year-old Annamalai is the first to rise to the position in the Tamil Nadu unit within a year of joining the saffron party.
Annamali |
He belongs to Karur district in the Kongu region of the state and hails from the influential Gounder community.
Kongu belt in western Tamil Nadu is among the regions where the BJP has pockets of influence. Like Assam, the state of Tamil Nadu and Kerala also goes to polls next year and hence projecting Annamalai to such a high post could be a major decision for the Team Modi.
Former Minister Anurag Thakur's name was also considered but the fact he also hails from Himachal Pradesh as the outgoing president J P Nadda may go against him for the time being.
