“I think that’s a very good outcome because otherwise, the fear was there might be some hasty decisions made in Washington which would have affected our exports,” he said.
“This way, there is time to discuss and negotiate," Congress leader and former UN official Shashi Tharoor said on PM Narendra Modi-President Donald Trump meet.
On illegal immigration, Tharoor backed PM Modi’s stance but asserted that the treatment of undocumented Indian migrants deported from the US should have been addressed. He was alluding to widespread outrage over reports that deportees were flown back in handcuffs and leg restraints.
Addressing a joint press briefing after the meeting with Trump, PM Modi said New Delhi and Washington were on the same page when it came to illegal immigrants, and reaffirmed India’s readiness to accept deported Indian nationals.
The Congress leader also hailed the F-35 deal announced during the visit. Trump confirmed that his administration was prepared to sell the stealth fighter jets to the Indian Air Force and pledged to increase military sales to India by billions of dollars.
“On the defence front, the commitment to sell us the F-35 stealth aircraft is very valuable because that is a state-of-the-art aircraft,” Tharoor said. “We already have Rafale. With F-35, the IAF should be in very good shape.”
Summing up the bilateral, Tharoor said, “We have got all that we could have expected, except for an assurance in the way the migrants were sent back.
“Anybody who enters another country illegally, they have absolutely no right to be in that country,” PM Modi has said.
“The only thing missing was the manner in which they were sent back. Otherwise, his stand was absolutely correct.”
Agreeing with the Prime Minister, Tharoor said, “These are misled youth who have been encouraged and induced to migrate illegally. They should be taken back if they’re Indian citizens.”
“But I hope something was said behind closed doors—that mistreatment and abuse should be avoided in the future," Tharoor said.
However, another Congress MP Manish Tewari said: "... While PM Narendra Modi is in Washington, DC, Trump signed an executive order imposing reciprocal tariffs on all nations and has repeatedly called India a serial abuser of tariffs...
Under these circumstances, those who are trying to pat themselves on the back that this was a successful visit may find that by the time they land back in India, the reality is completely different...
While we are spending billions of dollars buying aircrafts from America, the US President is calling us a serial abuser of tariffs..."
