New Delhi, Jan 31 Notwithstanding large scale protest including violence in certain parts in the country against CAA, President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday lauded the passage of the Bill on enactment of the new Citizenship law.


"I am glad to note that both the House of Parliament have passed the new amendment Bill and fulfilled one of the assurances given by Mahatma Gandhi," President said addressing the Joint Session of Parliament.


There was thumping of desks by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Home Minister Amit Shah and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh among the treasury bench members while there was some uproar raised by opposition members on the occasion.


"My government wants to make it clear that anyone reposing faith in India and is keen for citizenship can have the right," he said.
"....Prakriya paheli thi, aaj bhi aisi hae (Such process existed earlier and these remain the same today also)," President said trying to allay any fear on this.




President Kovind said, Mahatma Gandhi had said that - Hindus and Sikhs in Pakistan should be allowed to come to India if they want to come and to provide them all support and assistance is the 'duty of the government of India'.

"Several leaders and political stalwarts from time to time have spoken on these lines and it is our duty to honour such commitment," he said in reference to the enactment of the new Citizenship law under which persecuted religious minorities in Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh will be given citizenship in India following a fast track methodology.


Banned from campaigning BJP MP Parvesh sit on silent protest, Haryana CM flays AAP

New Delhi, Jan 31 West Delhi BJP lawmaker and one of star campaigners Parvesh Sahib Singh Verma on Friday sat on a silent protest in a dark room against the Election Commission's order to ban him from campaigning for four days for the ensuing Delhi assembly polls.

Meanwhile, joining the campaign trail for the saffron party Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar flayed Kejriwal government and said his government always cooperated with Delhi.
"AAP along with the Congress are supporting those who raise slogans against the country," Khattar alleged urging Delhi voters to exercise their franchise in favour of the saffron outfit.
West Delhi MP, Parvesh in a video posted on his Twitter handle and Facebook was seen sitting in a room lit with candles and making posters in which he accused AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal of using words like "traitor", and "Hitler" for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
In the video, Kejirwal's voice is heard wherein he flayed PM Modi also for his education background.
Parvesh Singh Verma, who has been barred from campaigning since Thursday evening, is seen covering his mouth with a black band.
Sources said after the EC ban, the lawmaker's wife has been campaigning for the BJP in assembly constituencies in West Delhi localities.
Joining the party campaign, among others Union Ministers Smriti Irani and Rajnath Singh also targeted the AAP regime during the day-long campaign in various parts of the city.

Home Minister Amit Shah addressed election rallies in Kamla Nagar, Shakoor Basti, Wajirpur and Model Town.
Smriti Irani addressed a meeting in Tughlaqabad constituency.
"Political parties in Delhi are supporting Tukde-Tukde gang and protesters in Shaheen Bagh, whereas our Prime Minister Narendra Modi is working to ensure safety and security of coming generations," she said.



Prez urges global community to take cognizance of atrocities on 'minorities' in Pak


New Delhi, Jan 31 President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday urged international community to take cognizance of the 'atrocities' being committed on religious minorities in Pakistan and called for strong actions.
"I condemn the atrocities committed against minorities in Pakistan. I urge the global community to take cognizance of the same. I urge the international community to take necessary steps on this," the President said in his address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament.


He said India is committed to 'Neighbourhood First' and has been working with most neighbouring countries to improve connectivity.

The coming decade will decide how India can emerge as a strong nation in the changing global dynamics.

"Let us make the Decade of 2020, a Decade of performing our duties....," he said.

The President said before becoming politician of any political ideology, "we all should remember that we are Indians first".

Thus, it is time to work for building up a 'New India', Mr Kovind said.

In democracy, nothing is more sacred than the 'people's mandate'.

"People of India has given a mandate to my government to build up a New India," President said.

"My government is taking all necessary and strong steps for making this decade as India's decade," Mr Kovind said.

New Delhi, Jan 31 President Ram Nath Kovind on Friday said the government believes in debate and discussions to resolve all issues but at the same time, any violence in the name of protest only contributes to weaken the nation.


In his address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament marking the beginning of Budget session, the President said the Modi government has able to deliver much on welfare schemes and also made Kartarpur Corridor functional.


"My government is committed to Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas and Sabka Vishwas. It is working very sincerely to implement these ideals," President said.

The achievements of the government has been recognised globally also, he said.

There has been increased improvement in connectivity sector in the far flung north east while the new measures in Jammu and Kashmir has also helped the people in this region.

Mr Kovind lauded the manner people reacted to the historic Ram Janmabhoomi mandate from the Supreme Court.

He mentioned about recent peace pacts related to Brus in Mizoram and Tripura and Bodos in Assam.


Under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, while around 3,500 houses were built in Jammu - Kashmir till March 2018, in less than two years thereafter construction of more than 24,000 houses has been completed: President Kovind

Congress, Trinamool Congress join Oppn members to protest against CAA



New Delhi, Jan 31 (UNI) Trinamool Congress and other opposition parties registered strong protest against the newly enacted Citizenship law on Friday in Central Hall of Parliament and outside.


"Budget Session, Trinamool's silent protest against #CAA, #NRC and #NPR during President's address in Central Hall. Silently holding up posters," ran a twitter missive from the outfit led by Mamata Banerjee, a stringent opponent of the new law that facilitates easier citizenship for non-Muslims - including Sikhs, Christians among others - coming from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Opposition sources said leaders of 14 opposition parties, including the Congress wore black arm bands during the President Ram Nath Kovind's customary address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament.


Leaders of these parties also sat together in one block in the Central Hall. Leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad and Leader of Congress in Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also joined their colleagues.

Former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh was in his designated front bench seat and was seen later exchanging pleasantries with President Kovind.

Opposition members raised objections during President Kovind's speech when he read out the portion hailing the CAA and congratulated the members of both Houses for passing the Bill.

Members who registered protest belonged to NCP, Samajwadi, Trinamool, DMK, RJD, CPI-M, JMM, JD(S), Kerala Congress (M), Congress and  IUML.
Earlier in the day, top Congress leaders led by Sonia Gandhi staged a protest near Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Parliament complex.

New Delhi, Jan 31 The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) on Friday backed Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his government's stance on CAA and adopted a resolution hailing the initiatives such as enactment of new Citizenship law and also inking of pacts with Bodo groups and  for settlement of Bru tribe members in Tripura.

According to sources at the meeting held here on the first day of Budget session, Prime Minister said the ruling combine had 'no reason' to feel defensive about the new law that has been vehemently opposed by the opposition parties and which also triggered nationwide protest.
The meeting worked out 'strategies' to ensure smooth functioning of the Budget session.


On the first day of the Budget Session, President Ram Nath Kovind made his customary address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament and applauded CAA calling it a fulfillment of assurances given by Mahatma Gandhi and other political stalwarts.


"I am glad to note that both the House of Parliament have passed the new amendment Bill and fulfilled one of the assurances given by Mahatma Gandhi," the President said.

Prime Minister Modi later took to the micro blogging site and tweeted: "Had an excellent meeting with the NDA family. Our alliance represents India’s diversity and dynamism".

Mr Modi further said - "NDA has made a mark for its pro-people and good governance related development programmes that are empowering millions".

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi flayed Congress for its stance against CAA and said the grand old party "has now realized its irrelevance and knows they are no longer on the front bench".


"That is why they have gone to the backbenches and are committing deplorable acts to gain limelight," Mr Joshi said in reference to Congress members including Ghulam Nabi Azad and Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury joining the opposition party MPs to sit at the back benches in Central Hall of Parliament during President Kovind's address.


The NDA partners are standing like a rock behind the Prime Minister Modi, said NDA leaders including those from allies such as JD(U) and LJP.

JD (U) reportedly raised the issue of NPR and suggested that there could be some changes brought in the forms - which have been criticised by the opposition parties.

Union Food Minister and LJP leader Ram Vilas Paswan and leaders from north east including NDPP lawmaker Tokheho Yepthomi from Nagaland also attended the meeting.

BJP president J P Nadda was also alongside Prime Minister and other senior ministers including Amit Shah and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi.

The NDA resolution also mentioned about the opening of the Kartarpur corridor, which too was hailed in Presidential address as one of the achievements of the Modi government.

The resolution also lauded the Modi Govt 2.0 decision to abrogate Article 370 and said this has given a new dimension to the development in the two newly created northern Union Territories.

"My Government has built the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor in record time, and dedicated it to the nation on the occasion of 550th birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Devji," President said in his speech.

The NDA resolution also supported and appreciated the government's decision to give ownership rights to residents of over 1700 unauthorised colonies in poll-bound Delhi.

Prime Minister Modi and senior party leaders including Mr Nadda and Home Minister Shah also held a separate meeting with BJP lawmakers and party leaders, sources said.




Cong obstructing Prez address to Joint Sitting was 'shameful' : Govt

New Delhi, Jan 31 The BJP and the NDA government on Friday slammed Congress for obstructing Presidential address to the Joint Sitting of Parliament and said such gestures were "really shameful" for a party which has been in power for more than 55 years.




"It is really shameful for a party which was in power for more than 55 years to behave in an undemocratic, irresponsible and immature manner....," Parliamentary Affairs Minister Pralhad Joshi said.


He said the Congress members' gesture was like carrying out an "absolutely condemnable act of obstructing the Honourable President".


"Congress has now realized its irrelevance and knows they are no longer on the front bench. That is why they have gone to the backbenches and are committing deplorable acts to gain limelight," Mr Joshi also tweeted.



The Minister pointed out that both the Houses of the Parliament have passed the CAA with "an overwhelming majority, of which Congress was a part of".
"Having already been given the opportunity to debate, discuss and discourse, they are now protesting against the same, outside and inside the premises of the great House," Mr Joshi wrote.



Opposition members belonging to Congress, Trinamool, NCP, Samajwadi, DMK, RJD, CPI-M, JMM, JD(S), Kerala Congress (M) and Indian Union of Muslim League raised objections during President Ram Nath Kovind's speech to the Joint Sitting of Parliament when he read out the portion hailing the CAA and congratulated the members of both Houses for passing the Bill.


The Bill on the new Citizenship law passed by Parliament during winter session in December, 2019.


Earlier in the day, top Congress leaders led by Sonia Gandhi staged a protest near Mahatma Gandhi's statue in Parliament complex.
