Nagaland politics: Portfolio allocation ::::: Kohima district happy, bad luck Mr Kropol Vitsu

Kohima district happy, bad luck Mr Kropol Vitsu

BJP members Imkong Imchen and Tovihoto may be 'displeased'

New Delhi

The winner takes it all. The leader has kept his flock happy and might have unwittingly sought to add insult to the injuries of others.

Southern Angami II legislator Kropol Vitsu of BJP has been made Advisor Prison and Printing and Stationery.

The former technocrat and his supporters had hopes about making into the ministry but he was unlucky.

His case is the same old story -- a good leader in the wrong party.
To be blessed with victory as a BJP candidate from Tenyimi belt is not a virtue
or perhaps not enough.

The portfolio allocation shows Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio in his renewed tenure also will go by his own calculations and without doing any corrective and balancing measures.

The Power Temptation

Check the list. His brother and Ghaspani II MLA Zhaleo Rio got the Urban Development and Municipal Affairs.

From Northern Angami I, the NDPP MLA Dr Kekhrielhoulie Yhome, who wrested the prestigious seat from the Shurhozelie family has been given Education and SCERT.

Despite being a first timer, fortune favours the son-in-law of former Assembly Secretary A S Arthur. Arthur later became a Minister in Manipur.

In 2018, the lucky "son-in-law" (nothing to do with Arthur family) was Bhandari MLA Mhonbemo Kikon. This year, Mhonbemo lost the seat to NPF's spirited fighting cock Achumbumo Kikon. Western Angami legislator S Kruse has been suitably rewarded with a ministerial berth and also important portfolios of Women and Child Development and Horticulture.

Having marginalised NPF, the NDPP could be the new regional outfit basking in the reflected glories of the BJP, but the fact of the matter is the party also lost prestigious Kohima town and Southern Angami I.

Independent candidate humbled NDPP nominee Medo Yokha of NDPP by a margin of 177 votes.

But there are certain debating points. Dr Tseilhoutuo Rhutso (Dr Ato) of NPP perhaps enjoyed 'hidden blessings' of NDPP leaders in Kohima town as Dr Nicky Kire had developed differences with the Chief Minister.

But to an extent even die-hard NDPP supporters will agree that the NDPP's acceptability among Kohima district electorate remains a question despite having a Chief Minister for the last 20 years. During S C Jamir days, the Congress generally swept nine to ten seats in Mokokchung district.

Southern Angami II - BJP, Vitsu

If Ms Kruse from Khonoma could be accommodated in the Ministry with a good portfolio, Dimapur III MLA Hekani Jakhalu has been also suitably rewarded having given the portfolio of Industry and Commerce as Advisor. On a personal front, Ms Hekani of NDPP also has Northern Angami II connections.

The portfolio allocations exercise has kept Chizami MLA happy having given the portfolio of Power and Parliamentary Affairs. Chazouba MLA  Kudecho Khamo gets Advisor Civil Administration Works Division (CAWD) and Taxes.

Khamo is a first timer and thus he cannot be displeased either.

In the unhappy list presumably Dimapur I MLA Tovihoto Ayemi is one as he had to part away with the Power portfolio and instead was given Tribal Affairs.

In the previous ministry, Tribal Affairs was with BJP state unit chief Temjen Imna Along. Despite a lackluster performance, Imna will be glad that he returned to the assembly and the high command, impressed with his Twitter performance, has given him a ministerial berth. His portfolios are Tourism and Higher Education.

Jamir: A legacy

New BJP representative from Koridang, Imkong Imchen, too will be unhappy with the portfolio of Advisor, Information and Public Relations and Soil and Water Conservation.

He would have been even keen for Deputy Chief Ministership. Among the MLAs, T Sukhalu of NDPP gets a juicy portfolio of Food and Civil Supplies -- once the favourite of Vamuzo's colleague Kihoto Hollohon.

The new Advisor for Fisheries is A Pangjung Jamir -- a former Director of Land Resources. Except the fact that he is now an honourable MLA, to many of his supporters, his case is a demotion. He had taken voluntary retirement and if he has looked for greener grass; he should be around waiting for his turn and real time.

Pangjung Jamir is BJP MLA from Tuli and he had defeated Amenba Yaden of NCP by a margin of 3029 votes.

Among the Ministers,  BJP legislator P. Bashangmongba Chang is a first timer and is lucky to get the portfolio of Housing and Mechanical Engineering.

G Kaito of NDPP should be more than happy to get the portfolio of Roads and Bridges.

The ambitions and desires of some BJP legislators have not been met notwithstanding the fact it is the Modi factor that influenced the final outcome.

As of now despite their 'desperate letters' of support and glib-talks as many as 23 MLAs belonging to NPF, NCP, NPP, LJP (Ram Bilas) and RPI(A) are 'outside' juicy power structures. But only a few of them have the potential to create a harmony among the 23 legislators to take on the ruling dispensation.

The so-called Democracy is far from strong when money is a big factor both pre and post elections.
