The flight, 6E6764, took off from Guwahati as scheduled, sources said. At 8.11 pm, the pilot declared 'fuel Mayday' at the Bengaluru airport's Air Traffic Control (ATC) after being unable to land in Chennai, they added.

The pilot did not receive clearance to land in Chennai due to congestion at the airport. Following this, he decided to circle around Chennai airport and eventually decided to move towards the Bengaluru airport, according to sources.

At 8.15 pm, the flight was allowed to land at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru, following which the passengers were deplaned, sources said. The plane was then refuelled and passengers were given refreshments.

The flight then took off for Chennai at 10.24 pm after refuelling and landed there normally, with passengers disembarking, sources said.

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and competent authorities were kept informed about these developments, sources further said.

Earlier on Friday, an IndiGo flight bound for Madurai was forced to return to Chennai just 30 minutes after takeoff due to a reported technical issue. The flight, carrying over 60 passengers, departed from Chennai at approximately 7.55 am.

However, shortly into the journey, the crew detected a technical snag and made the decision to turn the aircraft around as a precautionary measure. The flight landed safely back in Chennai and all passengers were safe.
