Deputing Menon for 'training' shows BJP is serious about Nagaland polls

New Delhi

BJP national secretary Arvind Menon has landed in Dimapur to kick-start
party's much talked about 'Booth Sashaktikaran Abhiyan training program.

Deputing Menon for the task shows the party high command is taking next year's
assembly polls in Nagaland 'seriously' and that the saffron party will be keen to
form government of its own.

The 'Booth Sashaktikaran Abhiyan' means strengthening of party's hold at the booth levels.

Lately, key leaders have been deliberating about pre-poll 'seat adjustment' alliance with NDPP but in probability the party will go to the electoral fray on its own.

The 'offer' of 20 seats by NDPP leader and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio is not acceptable

to the saffron party whose leaders argue strongly that in 2018 the party's strike rate was much

better than NDPP's and even NPF's.

Contesting only 20 seats, the Lotus party had picked up 12. This time around, it is eyeing 30 plus to

win and could end up contesting at least 50 constituencies.

However, sections of party leaders both at the state and at the central level are aware of organisational weaknesses as in last four and half years, some permutations and combinations prevented BJP's organisational growth in the state.

Between NDPP and BJP, of course it is a well known fact each of them can grow only when the

partners suffers nosedive decline.

A section of BJP leaders have alleged from time to time that Chief Minister Rio has 'influenced'

things in BJP and thus shrewdly prevented or stalled the organisational growth of the BJP despite

the fact that the saffron party is in power since 2018 in the Rio-led alliance government.

Several of its leaders including deputy chief minister Y Patton, the BJP ministers hold

important portfolios.

Mr Arvind Menon is known for no-non sense approach and has successfully handled

party's election strategies and organisational matters in key states such as West Bengal

and Uttar Pradesh.

In Uttar Pradesh, Arvind Menon was co-in-charge for Uttar Pradesh on the eve of assembly elections

earlier this year.

Unlike 2018, when training was held in Guwahati, this time around the BJP leaders have organised things

at the state and district levels.

Moreover, the training has been organised in Dimapur to start with.

Menon has also handled West Bengal polls in 2021.

The BJP state unit is now awaiting early appointment of a new president for the party

in Nagaland.

NPF may rejoice as NDPP-BJP alliance is on verge of collapse

New Delhi

The seat adjustment 40-20 between NDPP and BJP is all set for collapse
but there is no immediate threat to the stability of the Neiphio Rio-led ministry.

The ministry will continue as BJP ministers are unlikely to pull themselves
out but the high command has set the target for the saffron party of coming to power on
its own or as a major partner after 2023 elections.

"The ministers will like to take advantage of being in office," a source merely remarked adding
under the given situation the Chief Minister Rio may not push for dropping the ministers either.

A number of BJP leaders including elected legislators from the state are camping in Delhi
and are shuttling between BJP headquarters and the residences of top BJP leaders.

The Nagaland BJP leaders are also keeping their fingers crossed on the possible appointments of a new state unit chief. Several party leaders from Nagaland have been urging the central leadership to replace incumbent Temjen Along, whose work - according to them - at the organisational level has been found 'wanting' to speak the least.

The formal breakup of the alliance may be announced once peace negotiations bring in expected results or if President's Rule is imposed in case there is no break through made at the talks between the centre and the militant groups.

Already ten to 12 leaders are waiting in the wings for right signals and change of state unit president
to join the BJP. The saffron party is also likely to announce a power-packed campaign committee
and that could render the post of president just a decorative piece.

The Presidential elections and the voting on July 18 will be crucial as BJP central leaders hope to
get all 60 votes in favour of their presidential candidate Draupadi Murmu as the state now has an
opposition-less government between NDPP, BJP and NPF.

Of course, if the peace pact is inked, it will give a huge advantage to the BJP and party may develop confidence of contesting 40-50 assembly seats even as it avoids contesting all 60 seats.

In the event, the BJP decides to contest only 45-50 seats, the advantage for having an alliance will possibly shift to NPF whose leaders have indicated that they may not have candidates for all 60 assembly segments.

BJP sources also claim if NDPP-BJP alliance break up, there will be a huge Tsumani type desertion in the NDPP camp and many would like to join BJP or even the NPF.

As it is the G-21 has lost their credibility and not many of them have the chances of returning as MLAs, one source claimed.
