Chidambaram arrested: BJP sees 'vindication' of PM Modi's electoral promise

New Delhi, Aug 21  The BJP on Wednesday welcomed the arrest of senior Congress leader and former Home Minister P Chidambaram and suggested that the latest develop in the fierce politico-legal battle is only vindication of what Prime Minister Narendra Modi has promised on the eve of general elections this year.

Minutes after Mr Chidambaram's arrest, BJP's IT cell chief Amit Malviya tweeted a video where PM Modi in April 2019 had said "...jinhoney desh ko loota hae, unko pai pai lautani padegi".

Mr Modi also had said: "Some are on bail while some are getting dates from courts. I have managed to take these corrupt people to the doors of jail. One more term, and they can be pushed into it."

"You all have seen since 2014, with your support, I have taken these people to doors of jail. Investigations are on and after 2019....," Mr Modi has said.

A senior parliamentarian, Chidambaram also parted ways from Congress in 1990s and was part of UF government as Finance Minister as a nominee of Tamil Manila Congress.

On Wednesday, he became the first former Finance and Home Minister of the country to have been 'arrested'.

Throwback to 2010, between Shah and Chidambaram -- tables turned

New Delhi, Aug 21 It is a classic case of 'tables turned' and the hand of the clock coming back to the same position -- albeit with a difference -- as a lookout notice has been issued against former Home Minister P Chidambaram.
In 2010, ironically the incumbent Home Minister Amit Shah was asked to leave Gujarat when senior Congress leader was at the helm of affairs in Ministry of Home Affairs.

Nine years back, the Supreme Court had asked Amit Shah to 'leave' Gujarat in the much-talked about Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case.

Representing CBI as its counsel, Rajya Sabha MP KTS Tulsi had pointed out that Mr Shah was granted bail by Gujarat High Court as he enjoyed immense clout in the western state, which was under the BJP rule headed by Narendra Modi.

As soon as the Delhi High Court rejected his anticipatory bail in the INX Media case on Tuesday, suspense grew whether Mr Chidambaram would be arrested by probe agencies such as ED and CBI.

Reportedly, Mr Chidambaram has gone missing since Tuesday evening and teams from CBI and Enforcement Directorate had gone to his residence.

On Wednesday morning the ED issued a lookout notice for the former Union Minister.

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi lashed out at the government for abusing the powers of ED and CBI against Mr Chidambaram.

''Modi's Govt is using the ED, CBI & sections of a spineless media to character assassinate Mr Chidambaram. I strongly condemn this disgraceful misuse of power,'' Mr Gandhi said in a tweet.
