Congress decision not to allow Dr Singh contest for Lok Sabha in 2009 and then to allow him to continue as PM was the turning point: Sanjaya Baru (ex-Media Advisor to PM Dr Manmohan Singh)
"The decision not to come to Lok Sabha (as elected MP in 2009) and party's decision not to send him to Lok Sabha ... and then allow him to continue as PM for the second term which I think was the turning point," Baru told a podcast.
"In fact, let me also add, I came in June 2009 (from Singapore again) to congratulate him for the victory .... And I said Sir, you are in such good shape after all that campaigning and operation. He said I was willing to give my life for the campaign ....so here was the man....
One journalist called me later and I told him - This is Manmohan Singh's victory...and he said you are saying this but people here are giving credit to Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi".
"That journalist went to Prithviraj Chavan and he said, "Yes...the credit should go to Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Manmohan Singh ....so that was the beginning of the end I thought".
"I believe he served as the PM for 10 years not for political popularity but on what he earned and learned"
Naga leader Chubatemjen Ao pays homage to former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh and says:
"Death of Manmohan Singh, former PM, is indeed a sad event for the people of India. To me personally it brings few nostalgic memorable events. I heard of him first when he was India's Finance Secretary - with the image of a no non-sense man".
"....That time I was a Junior officer in State Planning Dept. and officers in Finance Dept were scared of him virtually for annual financial allocations for the state.
Later 1980-82 as Asst. Development Commissioner I was a key officer for Annual Plans every year and attended plan discussion in the Planning Commission. For sometime he used to be the Secretary and N D Tiwari was the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.
Later on learned of his appointment as Governor of R.B.I. Thus, he was already a highly exemplary person to me.
I believe he could serve the country as the Prime Minister for 10 years not on political popularity but on what he earned and learned.
Death is inevitable in the process the country has lost of a great human being."
NPF leader Chubatemjen Ao was Former Finance Minister, Nagaland (1990)
"India mourns the loss of one of its most distinguished leaders, Dr. Manmohan Singh Ji. Rising from humble origins, he rose to become a respected economist.
He served in various government positions as well, including as Finance Minister, leaving a strong imprint on our economic policy over the years.
His interventions in Parliament were also insightful. As our Prime Minister, he made extensive efforts to improve people’s lives," - PM Narendra Modi
(In fact, in March 2015, Singh was summoned by a special CBI court as an accused in a case linked to the coal scam (better known as Coalgate) where it was alleged that mining rights were assigned without transparency to private firms. The CBI later said there was no "prosecutable evidence".)
