The Delhi Disaster Management Authority, DDMA has issued an order banning all cultural events and gatherings for Christmas and New Year celebrations in the national capital in view of rising cases of new Covid variant- Omicron.

India's Omicron tally has shot up to 213 on Wednesday, with Delhi and Maharashtra recording the highest total cases at 57 and 54, respectively.
In its order, the DDMA asked all the District Magistrates and Deputy Commissioners of Police to ensure that no cultural events and congregations can take place during Christmas and New Year.
The Central government also issued fresh guidelines on Covid-19 on Tuesday.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will hold a meeting on the situation amid fresh concerns caused by the Omicron variant.
The Centre has already asked states to impose night curfew and strictly regulate large gatherings.
According to data updated on Wednesday, India recorded 6,317 new cases of Covid-19 and 318
deaths between Tuesday and Wednesday. The country’s active caseload stood at 78,190, the lowest in 575 days.
In the capital, the DDMA also said that all District Magistrates in coordination with Deputy Commissioners of Police will take concerted action in these areas as per the protocol like Test, Track and Treat, containment measures and enforcement of Covid Appropriate Behaviour.
Delhi recorded 125 Covid cases in a day with a positivity rate of 0.20 per cent while there was zero death due to the viral infection.
The Karnataka government on Wednesday directed the health officials, deputy commissioners and district surveillance officials to steadfastly track, trace and quarantine primary and secondary contacts of persons infected by Covid-19.
Nineteen cases of Omicron have been detected in Karnataka.
Around 300 Covid cases are being reported daily in Karnataka and the Test Positivity Rate (TPR) is between 0.25 per cent and 0.3 per cent, officials said.
Dr V K Paul, Member-Health, Niti Aayog said that booster doses, if introduced, have to be backed by scientific decision-making. “Health Minister has said in the parliament, the need, the timing, and the nature of boosting if any will be based on the scientific decision," he said.
Mumbai on Wednesday reported 490 new coronavirus positive cases, a jump of more than 160 from the previous day.
Mumbai now has 2,419 active coronavirus cases.
Telangana state also reported its first instance of local transmission of the Omicron variant of coronavirus.
