The assault: So much of respect for a woman: Banglar meye |
New Delhi: Actress-turned-neta and BJP candidate from Uluberia Dakshin Papiya Adhikari on Tuesdayalleged that she was assaulted by the Trinamool Congress workers.
A television video of her being heckled and slapped also went viral on television news channels and social media.
The BJP workers have alleged that Papia Adhikari was prevented from entering the polling station. "I am surprised the manner things turned out. Politics is certainly no longer for good people," an upset actress later told a television channel.
"Certainly, they were from Trinamool and one of them I remember was very tall," she said.
Ms Papia is locked in a triangular contest against sitting MLA Pulak Roy of Trinamool Congress and a Leftcandidate.
West Bengal went for the the third phase of polling on Tuesday in 31 assembly constituencies including eight in Hooghly, seven in Howrah and 16 in South 24 Parganas.
Earlier in the day, addressing an election rally at Coach Behar in North Bengal, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Trinamool chief Mamata Banerjee she has scored an 'self goal' in politics like in football after her 'khela' in Nandigram.
"Didi, people say you play a lot of football. The day you did 'khela' at the polling booth in Nandigram, the same day entire country could understand that you have lost the elections".
The Prime Minister also said that huge turnout of voters - around 80 percent on average - meant the state's ruling party Trinamool is losing.
"You (Mamata Banerjee) appealed for Muslim unity and said their votes should not be divided. You are asking for help.It shows that the Muslim vote bank, which you considered as your strength, has also failed you," Mr Modi said.

New Delhi/Guwahati: The third and final phase of polling in Assam on Tuesday, April 6, will decide among other thingsthe fate of key BJP leaders Himanta Biswa Sarma and state President Ranjeet Kumar Dass would be decided.
Sarma, Finance and Health Minister convener of the BJP-led North East Democratic Alliance, is contesting from his stronghold Jalukbari Dass has shifted from his earlier Sorbhog constituency to Patacharkuchi seat.
Tuesday will witness polling for the remaining 40 seats in the state in 12 districts across western Assam.
Dispur Congress candidate Manjit Mahanta and Promod Boro, UPPL President and BTC Chief were early voters, reports said on Tuesday morning.
"As the final phase of #AssamAssemblyPolls commences, I urge all those eligible to vote and fulfill your democratic duty. My earnest appeal, especially to the youth and first time voters, to take part in this great exercise," Assam ChiefMinister Sarbananda Sonowal said in a tweet.
There are altogether 336 Candidates in the race for 40 constituencies in Tuesday polls. The electorate will also decide the fate of Assam Ministers Siddhartha Bhattacharyya (Law) and Chandra Mohan Patowary (Transport, Commerce and Industry).
Officials said over 45,604 polling personnel would be engaged to conduct the polls in this phase while over 32,000 Central Armed Police Forces, along with thousands of state security force personnel, would be pressed into service to maintain law and order.
Singer Kalpana Patowary is also in the fray for the first time as an AGP candidate from Sarukhetri.
This year's polls have turned interesting after smaller parties shifted their alliance allegiance. In 2016, the BPF which was with the BJP and the AIUDF of Badruddin Ajmal which fought the polls on its own are withthe Congress-led grand alliance this time.
Out of the 40 seats in this round, Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), a BJP ally, last time bagged four seats while Bodoland People's Front (BPF) and AIUDF had secured eight and six seats respectively. Incidentally, both the Congress and the BJP had won 11 seats each in 2016 assembly polls out of 40 inthis region.Assam recorded high voters' turnout in the first two phases of polling on March 27 and April 1.About 81 per cent of the 73,44,631 voters exercised their franchise in the second phase of polling on April 1 in the 39 constituencies while 80 percent voters exercised their franchise on March 27 for 47 assembly constituencies.
ISF & 'Muslim vote base' factors under scanner in Bengal's third phase of polls
New Delhi/Kolkata: The state of West Bengal goes to the third phase of polls on Tuesday, April 6.All eyes will be on 31 assembly segments across Howrah, South 24-Parganas and Hooghly.
Key player in Tuesday's polling is certainly the Indian Secular Front (ISF). ISF chief Abbas Sidiqquihas fielded candidates in key segments such as Mandirbazar, Canning East (South 24-Parganas), Jagatballabhpur (Howrah), Jangipara and Khanakul (Hooghly).
Some other seats those will come under closer scrutiny will be the likes of Diamond Harbour, which fallsunder 'powerful' Trinamool leader Abhishek Banerjee's parliamentary constituency. One round of pre-poll violence has already taken place and BJP nominee Dipak Halder was injured.
In the first three hours of polling, Halder complained that "BJP workers" have been prevented to enterpolling stations in Diamond Harbour segment.
According to 2011 census, Muslims make about 35 percent of the South 24 Parganas district’s population. From minority voters angle, crucial round of voting is therefore expected in Baruipur Purba and Baruipur Paschim assemblysegments and also Magrahat and two segments in Canning.
Tuesday's polling is seen as crucial for the newly floated Indian Secular Front (ISF) and its leader Abbas Sidiqqui. The Muslim votes in last decade since 2011 had shifted from Left to Trinamool Congress. Thus, observers point out that a substantial shift in the Muslim vote to ISF-Left-Congress camp would makethe communists relevant yet again.
As it is, the Left had lost Muslim support to Trinamool and the majority community votes had overwhelminglyshifted to the BJP in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls.
Importantly, however, most seats out of 31 (where polling will be held on Tuesday), are Trinamool strongholds. In fact, around 2007-08, Trinamool supremo Mamata Banerjee got back her political rhythm after 2006 Lok Sabhapolls debacle in parts of Hooghly district and also in East Midnapore and South 24-Parganas.
Notwithstanding poaching from Trinamool and recent growth of the party, the BJP still has organisational weaknesses in some of these pockets. No wonder, it had to field Rajya Sabha member Swapan Dasgupta from Tarekeshwar.
But importantly, from the BJP's point of view polling in the third round will be held in the name of 'Ashol Poribortan (genuine change)' and of course in the name of Narendra Modi.
At the state level, the BJP poll strategists are optimistic that significant division in the Muslim vote would decide the ultimate outcome in nearly 90 assembly constituencies out of 294.
The ISF-Siddiqui factor was also seen as an 'important reason' that had made Trinamool Congress and Mamata Banerjee desperate about Hindu votes.
Senior Trinamool leader Farid Hakim reportedly told senior colleagues Saugata Roy and Partha Chatterjee in a meeting in Kolkata that Left-Congress-ISF alliance would "surely cut into" Trinamool’s vote share among Muslims.
This analysis is more of an admission for the earlier fault-line. The parliamentary elections in 2019 were proof that BJP's win of 18 seats out of 42 Lok Sabha seats was because of the shift of a large portion of CPI-M and other Left parties' vote.
The fear of Muslim support base and an aggressive BJP have made Mamata Banerjee to pushed 'Bangla-r meye (Bengal's daughter)' card more aggressively.
It is perhaps also a move to divide the Hindu vote. Strategy wise it is seen as a move to woo nearly 49 per cent of Bengal voters.
