Not that the prestige and honour of towering BJP leaders like Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani would have been diluted by a motivated observation of a panel, but it is also true the CBI court's verdict on Wednesday, Sept 30, 2020 makes it clear that the Liberhan panel remarks were uncalled for.
On page 942 in its voluminous report, the Justice M S Liberhan Commission that probed for 17 long years on Babri Masjid demolition had said, "It cannot be assumed even for a moment that L K Advani, A B Vajpayee or M M Joshi did not know the designs of Sangh Parivar..... These people, who may be called pseudo-moderates, could not have defied the mandate of the Sangh Parivar, and more specifically the diktat of the RSS, without having bowed out of public life as leaders of BJP."

Even on November 9, 2019 historic verdict of the Supreme Court while favoured Ram temple it had also said the Babri Masjid demolition was wrong.
The Supreme Court in its judgement pronounced by five judges, had clearly held that the demolition of Babri Masjid was “egregious violation of the rule of law”. The word 'egregious' means - outstandingly bad and shocking.
No wonder as the reports of the Special CBI court of Lucknow came in, BJP leader Dr Vinay Sahasrabuddhe welcomed the verdict saying, "A popular movement for grand Ram Temple at Ayodhya culminated into destruction of the structure on a disputed piece of land at Ayodhya! Spontaneity with strong popular belief triumphs the truth!"
Of course contrast this with CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury's tweet - which read -
"A complete travesty of Justice. All charged with criminal conspiracy to demolish Babri Masjid acquitted. Is it self imploded? The Constitution Bench headed by then CJI had said that demolition was an “egregious” violation of law. Now this verdict! Shame".
But judging objectively, it could hardly be said that Liberhan Commission had much credibility.
In 2010 - weeks after the panel report was tabled in Lok Sabha - former UP Chief Minister Kalyan Singh had told this writer in an interview: "The Liberhan Commission report is politically motivated and also not based on facts. What happened at Ayodhya on December 6, 1992 was not meticulously planned. It was only a spontaneous reaction of the anger of Karsevaks. I have said the Hindus and Muslims in this country must know and understand that Ram Temple will be built in Ayodhya and nobody can stop it".
In December 2009, after the highly controversial Liberhan Commission report was tabled in Parliament, Arun Jaitley – the then Leader of the Opposition in Rajya Sabha – had said during a debate: “Secular polity is not anti-religion, it is not irreligion. Civilized secular polity certainly requires the protection of every minority. But the basis of secularism also can’t be a reverse discrimination against the majority sentiment.
And if for 500 years, they live with this sentiment and struggles go on – how do you resolve this in the society, and therefore the resolution has to come through the process of negotiation”.
As stated above this was in 2009 and subsequently we had the Allahabad High Court verdict in 2010 and also the November 9, 2019 verdict by the Supreme Court.
Jaitley, it may be recalled, also had tried to expose the hollowness in the claims of the ‘secular forces’ including the Congress. “Any inclusiveness must necessarily include the aspiration of the minority, but it can’t be based on a reverse discrimination against the majority. It must be 'inclusiveness' for all. And therefore, the real answer must be justice for all”.
Illustrious Vajpayee
In fact, after Lok Sabha witnessed pandemonium after remarks on Vajpayee in 2009, the then Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh apologised to the Lok Sabha on behalf of the government for certain "undesirable" remarks by Congress member Beni Prasad Verma against Vajpayee.
BJP and allies had on December 8, 2009 created pandemonium in the House after Verma used a demeaning remark against Vajpayee forcing adjournments.
Sushma Swaraj, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, had welcomed Manmohan Singh's apology.
"We thank the Prime Minister for showing the grace in apologising when his attention was drawn to the issue," Ms Swaraj had said.
