Two years after ouster, Sheikh Hasina to make first public appearance in India
Two years after being ousted from power, former Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is set to address a virtual programme in New Delhi on August 5, 2026 .. where she will speak about her political roadmap and proposed return to Dhaka.
Often called 'daughter of democracy' in South Asia and later lambasted forher alleged dictatorial style of functioning; Sheikh Hasina is set to make her first open appearance before the media in India on Aug 5th.
Her government was ousted amid a mass student-led uprising in Bangladesh in 2024 wherein suspected foreign elements also played their part.
Hasina's event will be hosted virtually by the Foreign Correspondents' Club of South Asia (FCC South Asia) in New Delhi, where the Awami League chief is expected to speak about her future plans and her proposed return to Bangladesh.
The interaction will take place on August 5, 2026, from 6 PM to 7:30 PM at the Sir Mark Tully Auditorium on Mathura Road in New Delhi, with live streaming on the club's social media platforms.
FIRST MAJOR APPEARANCE SINCE OUSTER
The event coincides with the second anniversary of the collapse of Hasina's 15-year rule.
On August 5, 2024, student-led demonstrations against a controversial quota system evolved into a nationwide anti-government movement that forced Hasina from office. She left Bangladesh for India after protesters stormed and vandalised official buildings in Dhaka, bringing an abrupt end to her nearly 16-year rule.
All these are part of interesting developments unfolding in the region.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has been invited by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to visit New Delhi for the upcoming 18th BRICS Summit on September 12–13, 2026, though Dhaka has stated the invitation is currently under review.

Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Dinesh Trivedi, has expressed optimism, noting that New Delhi is eagerly waiting for the visit to happen in the near future to move bilateral issues forward constructively.
Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman traveled to New Delhi in April 2026 for preliminary high-level talks, marking the first major ministerial exchange under the new administration.
It is not without good reasons that Rahman's early foreign trips as prime minister bypassed India in favor of visits to Malaysia and China, leading analysts to view his diplomatic strategy as an issue-based reset rather than a traditional alignment.
