European MPs need to be 'objective', says BJP on abduction of Hindu girls in Pak

New Delhi, Jan 27 The BJP on Monday reacted strongly against the members of the EU Parliament slamming the CAA and also commenting on the situation in Kashmir in draft resolutions and asserted that it is "high time" they also needed to be objective.

"Have my esteemed friends of European Parliament sought to raise a voice over the victimisation of Hindu and Sikh girls in Pakistan? It is high time they also need to be objective," BJP leader and union minister Ravi Shankar Prasad told reporters here.

Answering questions at a media briefing here, Mr Prasad, however, said the BJP-led government believe in engagement and thus the Ministry of External Affairs will take up the matter in that spirit.

"It is an internal matter, we believe in engagement. Left parties had also sought this resolution. Our MEA will engage with them and explain the position," Mr Prasad said.

The union Law Minister said even "yesterday", there were reports about abduction of a Hindu girl in Pakistan.

To a question, he said the Congress party should clarify what is its official stand on the Modi government's decision to give Padma Shri, India's third highest civilian award to singer-musician Adnan Sami.

Meanwhile, Mr Sami in a tweet criticised Congress leader Jaiveer Shergill for his remarks.

"Hey kid, did you get ur brain from a ‘Clearance Sale’ or from a second hand novelty store?
Did they teach u in Berkley that a son is to be held accountable or penalised for the acts of his parents? And ur a lawyer? Is that what u learned in law school? Good luck with that" wrote the singer.

Mr Sami was born in London to a Pakistani Air force veteran and had applied for Indian citizenship in 2015 and became a citizen of the country in 2016.

Violence no solution to any issue, PM makes a clarion call in decade's first Mann Ki Baat

New Delhi, Jan 26 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said the spirit of ‘can do’ is emerging as a new Mantra and resolve in the making of 'New India' and maintained that the ethos of public participation is playing a game changer in the context of water conservation.

"The spirit of ‘can do’ is emerging as a new resolve. The sentiment of contributing positively to the country and society is gaining strength, day by day," Mr Modi said in his monthly radio programme 'Mann Ki Baat', the first of the calendar year 2020.

Prime Minister also made optimum use of the occasion to congratulate the Government and the people of Assam for being the 'excellent hosts' of 'Khelo India'.
"The ethos of public participation, besides in the area of sanitation, is rising rapidly on another front… and that is water conservation. Quite a few extensive and innovative efforts are under way, in every corner of the country, for the sake of conserving water," he said and mentioned about the nationwide Jal-Shakti Campaign launched last monsoon.

"....with the aid of public participation, a large number of lakes and ponds have been built. And the best part is that in this campaign, people from all strata of society contributed wholeheartedly. Take for instance Jalore district in Rajasthan. There, two historical step wells had turned into storehouses of garbage and dirty water," the Prime Minister said.
"But one fine day, hundreds of people from Bhadraayun and Thanawala Panchayats took a resolve to rejuvenate them, under the Jal Shakti Campaign. Much before the rains, people immersed themselves in the task of cleaning out the accumulated filthy water, garbage and morass. For this campaign, some donated money; others their labour & sweat. As a result, these step wells have turned into their lifelines now. A similar story comes across from Barabanki in Uttar Pradesh".
Similarly, Mr Modi said 'Village Suniyakot' along the Almora-Haldwani highway in Uttarakhand has also emerged as a similar example of public participation.
"To tide over an acute water crisis, villagers took it upon themselves to ensure that water reached their village. There was no stopping to their resolve".  Prime Minister also spoke highly about a 'very innovative idea' of harnessing a borewell for rainwater harvesting sprung up from Tamil Nadu.
"The country is replete with innumerable such stories, of water conservation, lending more strength to the resolves of New India".
Mr Modi referred to Khelo India hosted successfully in Assam recently and that came on the backdrop of violent protest over newly enacted CAA.
"Friends, on 22nd January, the third 'Khelo India Games' concluded in Guwahati. These games had around 6,000 players from different states participating. You will be surprised to know that 80 records were broken during this grand sports festival. And I am proud that of these 80 records, 56 were broken by our daughters. These laurels have been recorded in the name of our daughters," he said.

Mr Modi also said: "It is very pleasant for all of us to learn that the participation of athletes in 'Khelo India Games' is on the upsurge year after year. And this also tells you about the increasing inclination towards sports in our school children. I wish to tell all of you that in 2018, when 'Khelo India Games' were instituted, 3500 players took part, but in just three years the number of players has increased to more than 6,000 which translates to the fact that it has almost doubled".

"The stories of the patience and determination of these children who participated in 'Khelo India Games' as well as their parents will inspire every Indian. Now take the example of Purnima Mandal of Guwahati, a sanitation worker in Guwahati Municipal Corporation. But whereas her daughter Malvika showed her mettle in football, one of her sons Sujit represented Assam in Kho-Kho, while the other son Pradeep did the same in hockey".

''The sentiment of contributing positively to the country and society is gaining strength, day by day. When every Indian takes a step forward, it results in India going ahead by a 130 crore steps," he said.
Mr Modi also urged the people to try and keep fit. ''Do some exercises or play a little! Sports and games is the key to keeping fit,'' he said.

Violence no solution to any issue, PM makes a clarion call in decade's first Mann Ki Baat

New Delhi, Jan 26 (UNI) At a time when a series of protests are experienced across the country and some turning violent either over the issue of CAA or students fees, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday laid emphasis in categorical statement that "no problem in the world can be solved by creating another problem".

"It (any problem) can only be solved by seeking an optimal solution. Come, let's together forge a new India, where every issue is resolved on a platform of peace," the Prime Minister gave a clarion call on this year's first Mann Ki Baat radio broadcast.

".....Aise naye Bharat ke nirmal mein joot jaen, jahan shanti har sawal ka jawab ka adhar ho".

"Solidarity should be the key to resolving every issue. And brotherhood, should foil every separatist attempt to divide us," he emphasised.

Prime Minister said: "We live in the 21st century, that is the era of knowledge, science and democracy. Have you ever heard of a place where life has turned better due to violence?"

"Last year, in Tripura as well, more than 80 people left the path of violence and returned to the mainstream. Those who had picked up weapons thinking that violence could solve problems, now firmly believe that the only way to solve any dispute is peace and togetherness," he said.

"On the solemn occasion of Republic day, I would appeal to anyone in any part of the country, who's still seeking solutions to problems through violence and weapons, to return to the mainstream. They should have faith in their own capabilities and the capabilities of this country to resolve issues peacefully," Mr Modi said in his popular broadcast through All India Radio.

"Violence never resolves any issue," he said.

In this context, Prime Minister spoke about recent agreement under which the 25-year-old Bru-Reang refugee crisis has been resolved.

"This problem pertains to the 90s. In 1997, ethnic tension forced the Bru-Reang tribe to leave Mizoram and take refuge in Tripura. These refugees were kept in temporary camps in Kanchanpur in North Tripura. It is painful that the Bru-Reang community lost a significant part of their life as refugees. Life in camps meant that they were deprived of all basic amenities".

For 23 years – no home, no land, no medical treatment for their families, no education facilities for their kids, he said adding: "Just imagine, how difficult it must have been for them to live 23 long years in trying circumstances in camps! How painful it would have been to spend every moment, every day of their lives hurtling towards an uncertain future! Governments came and went, but there was no cure for their pain".

Despite that, the Prime Minister said their "unwavering belief in the Indian Constitution and culture continued".

It's a result of that belief that their life is on the threshold of a new dawn today, Mr Modi pointed out.

Give Modi a 'chance' to bring desired development in Delhi: Amit Shah

New Delhi, Jan 26 The BJP on Sunday urged voters in the capital to give Prime Minister Narendra Modi 'a chance' to provide good governance and sounding critical of Arvind Kejriwal-led regime asserted that someone who does not keep words cannot serve people.

"Narendra Modiji ne desh badla hae, ab woh Delhi Badlengey. Unhey aap ek mauka dijiye (PM Modi has changed the country, now he will change Delhi, please give him a chance)," Home Minister Amit Shah told an election meeting at Babarpur.

"Someone who bluffs cannot bring about the desired changes and development in Delhi," said Mr Shah.

He thanked the voters of national capital for reposing faith in the saffron party and giving Mr Modi a 'chance' in two subsequent Lok Sabha polls 2014 and 2019 and said the result of this is that the country is making rapid strides on various fronts.

BJP swept the Lok Sabha polls in 2014 and 2019 winning all seven seats. However, in 2015, the saffron outfit had suffered a major electoral debacle when it could win only three seats in the 70-member House and the remaining 67 went to Kejriwal-led AAP.

Seeking votes in the name of Prime Minister Modi is a significant political strategy for the Lotus party.

The BJP has this year not named its chief ministerial candidate. In 2015, the move to name retired police officer and social activist Kiran Bedi had backfired.

In his speech, Mr Shah especially mentioned about Modi government's yeoman works in providing electricity, toilet and cooking gas to the poor across the country.

"Similarly, the Ayushman Bharat scheme is helping poor in the health sector....," said Mr Shah, who recently relinquished the post of BJP national president.

"But the Kejriwal government did not allow implement Ayushman scheme in Delhi. He fears if poor people get benefited, then they will vote for Modiji," the Home Minister said.
Meanwhile, new BJP president J P Nadda also addressed an election meeting in Patel Nagar.

Mr Nadda highlighted the Modi government's achievements and made special mention of the centre's decision to do away with Article 370 in Jammu and Kashmir.
He also slammed the incumbent Chief Minister and said - "I keep telling this time and again, do not cast vote thinking what will the leader do in future, one should always vote considering a leader's past and credibility".
