In season of hardliner agenda, BJP elects moderate Nadda as new party chief

In a season  when the anti-CAA and abrogation of Article 370 have put BJP at the  receiving end, the saffron party on Monday elected an 'affable' J P  Nadda giving a moderate veneer to the party's hardliner pro-Hindutva  image.

Calling him an  'outstanding Karyakarta', Prime Minister Narendra Modi said Nadda has  added value to any 'responsibility' he has held.

After  the expiry of the time for filing nomination, Mr Nadda was declared  elected as the new party chief in presence of Mr Amit Shah among others.

Mr Shah, who is now Union Home Minister, handed a bouquet of flowers to his successor.
Several  BJP leaders including Mr Shah, Mr Rajnath Singh, Mr Nitin Gadkari  earlier filed nomination in favour of Mr Nadda who was appointed working  president of the party last year in June as a 'prelude' to hand over  the reins of the party.

The candidature of amiable Mr Nadda is said to have clear approval of Mr Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Felicitating  Mr Nadda, Prime Minister said opposition parties who were rejected by  people in elections are now busy spreading confusion and lies.

For  his part in his maiden address as the 11th national president of BJP,  Mr Nadda said under his leadership the party will try to capture power  in states where they are not and the outfit would stand by its  ideologies and principles.

'Today, we're the  world's largest party that is in power in India. We have the highest  number of MPs and MLAs in the country. We are not going to stop at this.  There are some states left and we will make sure we reach to them as  well,'' he said at the felicitation programme at the party headquarters  here in presence of Prime Minister Modi and host of senior leaders.

The assertive statement can be linked to West Bengal which goes to the polls next year.

The  BJP is on aggressive campaign in West Bengal which was for long a  strong and invincible communist forte. Saffron outfit won 18 Lok Sabha  seats from the state in 2019 surprising its foes and friends alike.

Earlier  in the day, Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani exuded confidence that  the saffron outfit which had negligible organisational presence in the  eastern state will also have BJP government soon.

''Just like Amit Shah gave effective leadership in last five and a half years to the party, I am sure Mr Nadda will take BJP  to new heights. And in states like West Bengal, I am sure we will be able to form government in West Bengal,'' Mr Rupani told reporters here.

Mr Nadda's taking over the affairs of the party comes days before BJP faces a stiff electoral battle against AAP in Delhi wherein it is struggling to get back to power since last 22 years.

BJP's presidents include founding fathers Atal Bihari Vajpayee and patriarch L K Advani, who has been the longest serving party chief for a period of 11 years spanning over three terms.

However, Mr Advani's last stint was marred by controversies and in 2005 he had to move out following much resentment in the saffron camp for his 'Jinnah was a secular leader' remark.
Rajnath Singh had succeeded Advani in December 2005 but his first stint was not successful as the party had failed to return to power at the Centre in 2009 polls.

However, in his second term from January 2013 till mid 2014, Mr Rajnath has to his credit for leading the party to major electoral win after having made Narendra Modi the party's prime ministerial face brushing aside objections from towering leaders such as Advani and 'reservation' by several others.

List of BJP's presidents include : Atal Bihari Vajpayee (first after formation of the party in 1980), L K Advani (three terms), Murli Manohor Joshi, Kushabhau Thakre, Bangaru Laxman (first Dalit BJP chief), Jana Krishnamurthi, M Venkaiah Naidu, Rajnath Singh (two terms),  Nitin Gadkari and Amit Shah.

Nadda's success has come through the hard work in UP in the 2019 general elections, as in-charge of the northern state. He camped in the Hindi heartland state for weeks and visited 80 Lok Sabha constituencies extensively.

The member of the House of Elders is also hailed as a 'silent performer'. He is also known as a 'performer' as the Health Minister under PM Modi during first tenure and also for his clean image.
In fact, none other then DG of World Health Organisation, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, had tweeted plaudits for Mr Nadda and of course Prime Minister Modi for the successful implementation of the ambitious 'Ayushman Bharat' health scheme.

Mr Nadda has been 'rewarded' for BJP's clean sweep in the Uttar Pradesh polls last year which was not easy as there were high stake players-- two Indian National Congress in-charges Priyanka Gandhi Vadra (for eastern UP) and Jyotiraditya Scindia-- besides two regional contenders, Bahujan Samaj Party and Samajwadi Party.

Moderate, soft-spoken Nadda takes reins of BJP

New Delhi, Jan 20 (UNI) BJP new president Jagat Prakash Nadda is renowned for his amiable personality and an unblemished image.
The friend of all attitudes will be always credited with giving a moderate veneer to BJP's hardline pro-Hindutva image.
Nadda, 59, on Monday, became the 11th national president of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party, succeeding one of the most successful BJP chiefs Amit Shah.

He is considered an alter ego to his predecessor Amit Shah in more ways than one.
While Shah is known for his strict adherence to norms, Nadda is a disciplined foot soldier of the Sangh parivar and the BJP.

His acceptability across the political spectrum and also his convent education in childhood would always come in good stead for the BJP, whom critics and opponents often call 'communal and reactionary'.

Mr Nadda's taking over the affairs of the party comes days before BJP faces a stiff electoral battle in Delhi against the new kid on the block Aam Aadmi Party where it has been out of power since the past 22 years.
In June 2019, Nadda was appointed as the working president- a first for the party - as a prelude to his election as the new organisational head of the saffron party.
Nadda is seen as the choice of both Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Mr Shah for the job.

Born on December 2, 1960, to Krishna and Narain Lall Nadda, Jagat Prakash was educated at St Xavier's School, Patna. He did his BA from Patna College, Patna University and LLB from Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.
Nadda is always credited for ear-on-ground politics starting from student days, accessibility to party colleagues and crucial proximity to the Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh.

Electoral challenge is no big thing, says PM

New Delhi, Jan 20 (UNI) Congratulating newly elected BJP president J P Nadda, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said electoral challenge is no big thing, but ''we have to live up to people's expectations''.

''Our problem is not due to our lapses but because people are with us.  When we were in opposition....we faced challenges ...in coming days there will be more challenges. Electoral challenge is no big thing...but we have to live up to people's expectations,'' he said addressing party workers at party headquarters here.

''Nadda Ji's leadership will give us new energy, hope, and inspiration. We must ensure that he is successful. Whatever he asks for, we must deliver.  As a party worker, we must walk with our core values in the journey ahead with love for our motherland,'' Mr Modi said

BJP is in power not as a temporary phenomena, the Prime Minister said here and maintained that ''we are here for a long time.''

Mr Modi said Mr Nadda is a close friend and ''we have moved on bikes''.

He said Mr Amit Shah's stint will be remembered for long.

A large number of BJP supporters from Himachal Pradesh were present at the party headquarters here.

Mr Modi said Mr Nadda is as much of Himachal as much of Bihar.

Speaking on the occasion Mr Nadda said,'' A worker like me coming from a village and becoming the National President is the specialty of the BJP.''

Under Mr Shah between 2014 and 2019, the BJP has grown as an organisation at various levels especially in states where it hardly had presence previously.

The list of states where BJP has able to make its presence felt and also capture power include Tripura - once a Leftist bastion. Similarly, the saffron party has emerged as a serious challenger to Mamata Banerjee-led Trinamool Congress in West Bengal.

Mr Nadda's taking over the affairs of the party comes days before BJP faces a stiff electoral battle against AAP in Delhi wherein it is struggling to get back to power since last 22 years.
