FM Nirmala Sitharaman blasts Chidambaram....says "twin balance sheet problem is not something which I would want to learn from those 'very competent doctors'

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman in Rajya Sabha

Taking potshot at Chidambaram, the Finance Minister said - ".....twin balance sheet problem is not something which I would want to learn from those 'very competent doctors'."

Senior Congress leader also shot back and took to Twitter:

"Strange behaviour of FM who declined, or was unable, to answer a question of Mr Anand Sharma in the RS today. Her unwillingness, or inability, to answer a straightforward question tells volumes about the FM as well as this government," he said.

"All that the FM had to do was look at that first page and explain why capex out of borrowed money was reduced from 1.4 to 0.7 per cent of GDP," he said.

From Rajya Sabha proceedings:

"Arrogant we are, is it? Masses we are, is it? I would like to tell you this, Sir. I have listened to every one of the Members and I shall definitely take each one of their comments and suggestions and answer them, but not when they are constantly throwing barbs at us saying, 'Oh! Very incompetent doctors',.....

"....'masses and classes'. I would like to answer this, Sir. What was the remedy offered in 2008-09, and what did it result in? We certainly don't want that burden on the Indian economy, for today or for the future. And, I have got specifics with which I would say this. Sir, India was very fortunate, between 2004 and 2014, to have inherited the good work of Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee as a result of which there was such a cushion available. ....

"Sir, therefore, I would like to list out some of the diagnoses of what went wrong between 2008 and 2009 and the treatment that had been offered here. Sir, the twin balance sheet problem is something which we have inherited in 2014 as a result of which a whole lot of issues have cropped up for the health of public sector banks, for the number of cronies who have run away from the country and whom we are trying to bring back. So, that twin balance sheet problem is not something which I would want to learn from those 'very competent doctors'. That is one.

"Secondly, NPAs ran into lakhs of crores of rupees. We are retrieving all of them and, in every Session of Parliament, we are standing up and answering questions on how much has been brought back and the number of people on whom we have taken action.

"NPAs ran into lakhs of crores of rupees and, of course, the cronies have run out of the country. We are getting them all back. That is another remedy offered during the crisis of 2008-09. We certainly do not want to inherit or copy those remedies of 'competent doctors'."

Sir, inflation was in double digits. Food inflation was also in
double digits, and consistently at that. I have read out the figures, but I
would talk about the fiscal deficit also during that period. Today, the FRBM
Act is being shown to us. Do you know what it is? Do you know what you
are doing to it? I would like to quote it back to ask how much of FRBM has
been violated in every year of the UPA Government, but we have not done
that. So, we have not taken the remedies offered by the 'competent
doctors'. On handling inflation, we have kept it well under four per cent all
through our rule, and under Prime Minister, Shri Modi, food inflation has
never crossed the acceptable threshhold.

Sir, I now come to data and account fudging on which we are most
often questioned.

I just like to highlight two
things here. Between 2005-06 and 2010-11, every year, there was an issue of
oil bonds. The total value of oil bonds issued was Rs.1,40,000 crore and that
compared to the GDP then made up for 1.9 per cent of the GDP then.

Imagine what it would be today! But then it was 1.9 per cent of the GDP
then. Even today, we are paying every year Rs.9,900 crore on these bonds
as interest. That was the total value of bonds for which we are paying
interest. All right, Government borrow and we have to pay interest. It is
understood. Government's liability on oil subsidy is something where we all
have to see when we are talked down to fudging of accounts. Government's
liability on oil subsidy was shifted to Oil Marketing Companies so that their
books appear nice and they don't have any kind of too much of overload.
The Oil Marketing Companies were kept with this burden. After we have
come out in 2014, we have taken that also.

Moditva or the Lack of it: When it comes to assembly polls, Indian states prefer to keep Lotus party out

LJP president Chirag Paswan says people reward parties on the basis of work.

"Just as in the Lok Sabha elections, Narendra Modi ji got vote, today Arvind Kejriwal ji got the blessings of the people on the basis of his work. Lots of best wishes," Chirag, son of Union Minister Ram Vilas Paswan, tweeted.

The big picture message is hardly understood by many. Is Indian voter opting for a strong centre under Narendra Modi and reposing faith on regional players when it comes to state polls? They do not mind even the Congress --- taking over reins of power in Chhattisgarh and Madhya Pradesh where the BJP has been in power for 15 long years since 2003 up to 2018.

In fact, when it comes to state polls - the BJP is experiencing defeats in state after state! In December 2018 assembly polls, Congress ousted BJP in Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh and also Rajasthan.
In 2019 high voltage polls, the BJP got an enhanced mandate. But the BJP did not do well in Haryana although it captured power by working out a post-poll alliance politics with a regional player.

BJP and its erstwhile party Shiv Sena won in Maharashtra but Sena ditched to capture power by aligning with the Congress and the NCP. In Jharkhand again, the BJP has lost a key state with tribal population.
Earlier in May 2018, the Lotus party could win in Karnataka and initially got a setback as JD(S) and Congress formed government. However, the BJP is back in power in Bengaluru after it won over disgruntled opposition MLAs.

In next few months, the focus will be on Bihar polls. The BJP had lost power in Bihar in November 2015. In 2016, BJP won Assam and was hardly a fighter in West Bengal and Kerala.

But in 2017, there was a big win in Uttar Pradesh and the saffron party put Hindu monk Yogi Adityanath in the corridors of power.

The BJP has lost Delhi yet again. Here too, the voters have shown faith in the regional player - AAP.

Former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda wrote a letter congratuling Arvind Kejriwal over AAP's "splendid" win.

"You richly deserved this win. It is also a remarkably good sign in Indian politics that your focus on development has paid off immensely," Gowda said.

"Your victory assures the rest of India yet again that desperate acts of communal polarisation has limited currency. The talk of your government's good work in the health and education sectors has reached the corners of Karnataka and the rest of India too," said Deve Gowda.

P Chidambaram, Congress

"AAP won, bluff and bluster lost. The people of Delhi, who are from all parts of India, have defeated the polarising, divisive and dangerous agenda of the BJP," Chidambaram tweeted.
"I salute the people of Delhi who have set an example to other states that will hold their elections in 2021 and 2022," he said.

"Remember, when Delhi voted, millions of Malayalees, Tamils, Telugus, Bengalis, Gujaratis and people who came from other states of India voted. If the voters represent the views of the states they came from, the Delhi vote is a booster for the confidence of the Opposition that the BJP can be defeated in every state," Chidambaram said.

What is right and wrong about BJP campaign and why things did not convince the voters?

In 2015, PM Modi had campaigned aggressively addressing several rallies, but the result had gone in favour of AAP.

This time around it was Amit Shah - who took charge ! Number of Chief Ministers, Union ministers and over 250 MPs -- including all seven from Delhi - campaigned. Amit Shah led high pitched rallies and roadshows, but all of these did not change the heart of Delhi voters !

Take a closer look and it was perhaps a shocker as just nine months back, PM Modi was BJP's mascot and only vote getter and the party had won near 57 per cent votes in Delhi in 2019 parliamentary polls. BJP had won all seven seats in 2019 and they had done so in 2014 also!

A new Narrative

Some RSS leaders are happy one way !!

And it is not without good reason, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is now cheering up 'Bharat Mata Ki Jai' and 'Jai Hanuman'.

It is the neo-Hinduisation of India polity !! For a change, everyone is turning pro-Hindu !! Observers say there will be more of temple run by the likes of Rahul Gandhi and other leaders.

In August last year, AAP leader Kejriwal was among the first to back abrogation of the Article 370.

Like Modi had mixed his development syntax with Hindutva tilt, the AAP is not totally against a tilt towards Hindutva agenda. He avoided visiting Shaheen Bagh and has been constantly said that his government is committed to welfarism !!

Therefore, the BJP and Amit Shah's consistent attempts to label Kejriwal as working against India could not go further. Kejriwal also played it up well --- "People of Delhi will decide whether I am a terrorist or your son".

Congress could garner only 4.31 - the record lowest

AAP polled 53.65 per cent of the votes in February 8 elections in Delhi, the Congress could garner only 4.31 - the record lowest and the BJP managed only 38.47 per cent.

The Congress vote percentage came below five per cent bar ! And the grand old party failed to open its account yet again. It had scored zero earlier in 2015 assembly polls and also in 2014 and 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

In the 2015 Assembly elections, the Congress vote share was 9.7 per cent - thus it implies poor show by the Congress actually helped AAP cause better and BJP failed to touch double figures - confined to just 8 seats -- a five leap from the tally of three in 2015.

Notably for the Congress, it has unable to even save the security deposits of its candidates in many seats. The Congress alliance with RJD - which was given four seats too did not make any difference.

After former Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit took charge of party affairs ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, significantly the grand old party made ground. The party''s vote share increased to 22 per cent though no Congress candidate won. But the AAP's voteshare was 18 per cent - a clear third.

Congress leader Sharmistha Mukherjee said: "The BJP has divisive politics, Arvind Kejriwal has smart politics, but what are we doing? Can we honestly say that we have done all to put our house in order? We are busy capturing the Congress whereas other parties are capturing India. If we are to survive, it's time to come out of our exalted echo chambers!"

The Congress has been a divided house in Delhi since 2010 when the Commonwealth Games were organised.
The corruption charge actually stuck ! The Nirbhaya case in 2012 was also mishanded !

There was tension and angry-noisy protest !! @Jamia-Shaheen Bagh

A major scuffle was triggered after policemen tried to stop the Jamia protesters. Many of them jumped over barricades !

Jamia Millia Islamia proctor Waseem Ahmed Khan appealed to the students to disperse and not meddle with the police. "Respect the law and peacefully go back," he urged.

"All these exit polls will fail. Save my tweet...," Manoj Tiwari, BJP

The BJP is referring to the exit poll predictions of the 2017 Punjab Assembly elections. The exit polls in 2017 had hinted at the formation of an AAP government in Punjab, whereas the Congress finally took over the reins of power.

Amit Malviya, IT cell chief of BJP said the counting will reveal "shocking results". He said the sudden increase on Feb 8 polling day augurs well for the BJP.

"The Election Commission confirmed the turnout of 62.59% in Delhi. This is almost two per cent more than the 2019 Lok Sabha polls," which makes the matter "more interesting". - Amit Malviya

Pravesh Verma, West Delhi MP - the BJP could end up picking up 50 seats. Four seats may go to Congress and 16 seats for AAP.

GameChanger: Peace Bonanza and Development – Modi’s trump card for Assam

(this piece came in Indiafacts.org)

http://indiafacts.org/game-changer-peace-bonanza-and-development-modis-trump-card-for-assam/

A tryst with peace, destiny and development !

A festive atmosphere prevails in Kokrajhar to celebrate the Bodo accord. The All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU) and NDFB has organised a bike rally on Feb 6. On the other hand the residents of Kokrajhar lighted one lakh earthen lamps and prayed for overall peace in the region and to welcome the Prime Minister.

Kokrajhar wore a fresh look. The town has been cleaned and roads have been repaired.

It may be mentioned here that more than 10,000 ABSU volunteers have assembled in Kokrajhar along with several cultural troops from across communities to take part in the celebration.

Narendra Modi's re-election in May 2019 was billed as a turning point in India's political history in more ways than one.

A known Modi-bashing section predicted doom - that the country would march towards a near fatal situation for religious minorities including Muslims and Christians and also tribals; but the other said notwithstanding the fear mongering of 'Hindu majoritarianism', there would be works for an inclusive India - of course a different and a 'New India' as envisioned by Modi himself.

It is in tune with this 'aspirational India' that the NDA dispensation has worked for a peace treaty with Bodos - one of the vulnerable communities in far-flung north east - which has often complained of facing discrimination.

The new agreement acknowledges and virtually creates 'a Bodo homeland' but without separating it from Assam. Here lies the crux of the puzzle whom we can call a 'game changer'. "This new pact with Bodos wherein all militant groups belonging to the community has come forward will be seen as a 'new Model of Development'," says eminent north east watcher Deepak Dewan.

It is now presumed that this catchword 'homeland without coming out of the parent and existing states' would be useful for the centre to reach out to other tribal groups in states like Manipur, to an extent in Nagaland - wherein in Mon-Tuensang region there is already a clamour for a separate Union Territory and also to other ethnic and tribal groups in Assam - in Karbi Anglong, and Cachar.

It is on this backdrop the visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Kokrajhar - the major township in the demarcated Bodo Territorial Region would gain currency. There are other messages too as Prime Minister visited Assam - first time since the strong spate of anti-CAA protest in Brahmaputra valley region of the state.

Mr Modi's visit has given a big picture message that it is only in a part of Assam - that the Prime Minister could face a hostile crowd; in rest of the state he still remains a public hero, a performer and a catalyst of development.

In view of the protest in Assam and the cancelled Summit between PM Modi and his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe in December, Modi's visit thus puts a right 'reset' for the ruling dispensation. BJP came to power in 2016 after contesting a fierce poll that ultimately resulted in the ouster of the Congress after 15 long years.

Other regional parties of Assam - AGP and AIUDF - had ceded anti-Congress space to the BJP in Barak Valley and Brahmaputra Valley regions in 2016. But the saffron party faces tough competition now in Brahmaputra Valley due to strong anti-CAA sentiment.

Thus for BJP from the point of view of electoral politics, BJP is eyeing 12 seats in Bodo region for itself and possibly for its regional alliance partners. In Bengali-dominated Cachar Valley, which has 15 seats - the saffron party feels it can gain from the Hindu votes even as Bengali Muslims would grudge it with more intensity than it did in the past. The Muslim votes could actually go to AIUDF of Badruddin Ajmal and Modi-Amit Shah duo would not mind that much as long as Congress remains in the periphery.

So rough calculation wise - between Barak Valley and Bodo region - BJP is seeking for itself a big 'advantage' vis-a-vis next year's general elections. The political premium is - notwithstanding the anti-CAA hype, Assam is still not entirely a lost game for the BJP.

But in Kokrajhar-based council, the entire electoral chess board is a bit complex than it could appear on the face value.

The hitherto dominant player is Bodoland People’s Front, which won 11 seats in 2016 assembly polls out of 12. More importantly, it is an alliance partner of the BJP. Notably, Bodoland People’s Front, which had signed a peace deal in 2003, is a popular political force.

But now that the new peace accord has come, there will be several other stakeholders.

All Bodo Students Union is an influential youth-based organisation and if they enter political fray, the BPF-BJP calculus could be disturbed.

Moreover, the 'peaceable' comrades and leaders of various erstwhile NDFB groups will also harbour political aspirations. Here too, the calculation in the BJP camp is emergence of more regional parties would again further marginalise Congress.

What has been political masterstroke for the BJP is that the latest round of 'final settlement' offers a win-win situation for everyone except Congress.

Dr Swamy, BJP: Jhadu (AAP) is getting enough vote without my vote ......

Dr Swamy, BJP: Jhadu is getting enough vote without my vote . I have to stand by my BJP worker especially after the Budget googly

Exit polls for the Delhi assembly election predicts convincing win for Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party.

The Times Now-Ipsos exit poll predicted that AAP will win 47 seats against 23 for the BJP.

The Republic-Jan ki Baat survey gave the AAP 48-61 seats and the BJP 9-21 seats.

The India Today-Axis poll forecast 59-68 seats for the AAP and 2-11 for the BJP,
ABP-CVoter says AAP between 49 and 63 and that BJP may win 5 to 19.

An exit poll from Neta-NewsX said the AAP may win 53-57 seats and the BJP 11-17.
ABP's survey says - AAP's vote share may be a whopping 50.4 per cent as against 36 per cent by the BJP.

There seems to be modest change in vote share for both BJP and AAP. In 2015, vote share was 54.3 and 32.3 per cent for AAP and BJP respectively.
AAP had won 67 and remaining three seats went to BJP. Congress scored a zero !!

Delhi BJP chief Manoj Tiwari said - the BJP will win 48 seats.

Game Changer Mood sets in: PM had avoided Assam in December and January

Game Changer Mood sets in: PM had avoided Assam in December and January,

but now one lakh earthen lamps were lit to welcome him !!

PM O tweets - : "He is now on the way to Kokrajhar".

Narendra Modi himself wrote: On my way to Kokrajhar!
Looking forward to being among people there.

“Tomorrow, I look forward to being in Assam. I will be in Kokrajhar to address a public meeting. We will mark the successful signing of the Bodo Accord, which brings to an end a problem that had been persisting for decades. It marks the start of a new era of peace and progress,” PM Modi said in a tweet.

A festive atmosphere has been unleashed in Kokrajhar and other parts of Kokrajhar to celebrate the Bodo accord - inked between different factions, the Assam government, the centre and influential ABSU.

The All Bodo Student’s Union (ABSU)and NDFB has organised a bike rally on Feb 6, 2020 in Kokrajhar in which a large number of ABSU and NDFB cadres took part. The bike rally was flagged off by ABSU adviser K Basumatary.

Local residents lighted one lakh earthen lamps on Feb 6, 2020 evening and prayed for overall peace in the region and to welcome Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Kokrajhar wore a fresh lookas the township -once identified with tension, violence and arson- has been cleaned and roads have been repaired.

Over 10,000 ABSU volunteers are camping in Kokrajhar for the celebration.

The State and Central Governments must work together to ensure that the accord signed with four factions of the National Democratic Front of Boroland (NDFB) and the All Bodo Students’ Union (ABSU) is implemented in letter and spirit, said the chairman of the NDFB (R ) , Ranjan Daimary. He also said that there should not be any division among the Bodos and non-Bodos living in the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). -

PM Modi in Lok Sabha, Feb 6, 2020:

said:

".....In a letter to Assam's first Chief Minister Gopinath Bordoloi in 1950, Nehru had asked him to distinguish between Hindu refugees and Muslim migrants from Pakistan .....
"This was not only Mahatma Gandhi's but also Nehru's sentiments. Was Pandit Nehru communal? Did he discriminate between Hindus and Muslims? Did he want Hindu Rashtra?" PM Modi asked in reference to the raging debate on new Citizenship law.

जब मैंमाननीय अिीर जी को देखताह, उनको सनुताह,  तो मैं Kiren Rijiju ko badhai deta hoon ! ....

भाषण के साथ-साथ woh Gym भी करते हैं।

He is giving a push to Fit India Movement

The Raj Bhawan and Mamata Govt headed for a major clash with West Bengal Governor Jadgeep Dhankhar stating that he will "create history" with his address to the Assembly at the beginning of the budget session.

Amit Shah addressed three roadshows on the last day of election campaign here:

There was repeating chanting of 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans

"Shaheen Bagh is the joint venture of the Aam Aadmi Party and the Congress. Kejriwal and Rahul Gandhi are worried that Shaheen Bagh should not be discussed. I want to ask them why the security of the country should not be an electoral issue? Why are the people sitting in Shaheen Bagh demanding 'Jinnah Wali Azadi' and why the tukde-tukde gang is supporting them?

"Shame on these people. I want to tell all of you that tukde-tukde gang is going to get a shock, because you are going to press the button on the lotus symbol on February 8 for the development of Delhi and the country," he said at a road show in Seemapuri constituency in North East Delhi.

New Delhi, Feb 6 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday took a dig at Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi for showing disrespect to constitutional provisions and at the same trying to raise the issue time and again to attack his government.

"Congress should raise the slogan Sambhidhan bachao, Sambhidhan bachao (Save Constitution) on daily basis hundred times. This is because none other than the Congress tried to suppress constitutional provisions more," Mr Modi said in the Lok Sabha.

"These are the same people who did not remember the task of protecting Constitution during Emergency....," he said.

"It is the same party which brought in changes in Indian constitution most of the time. It is the who had dismissed the elected state governments number of times. It is the same party and people who had torn off the copy of the Ordinance passed by the union cabinet," he said in reference to the conduct of Rahul Gandhi when Manmohan Singh was the prime minister.

Mr Modi also said, "These people ought to take lessons on the importance of the sanctity of Indian Constitution" and in reference to Sonia Gandhi's alleged extra constitutional powers during UPA dispensation, the Prime Minister maintained. "There was a powerful body National Advisory Council which had more powers than PM and the then PMO. A government was run by remote control".

"Who stopped to implement Indian Constitution in Jammu and Kashmir ?," he asked while replying to the debate on the President's address.

He also took dig at Congress leader Shashi Tharoor and tried to remind him that he has been a 'son-in-law of Jammu and Kashmir' and thus should understand the importance of implementing Constitution in the northern province.

Taking potshots at Congress floor leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury, the Prime Minister said - the senior lawmaker is showing so much of enthusiasm as if he is now a brand ambassador of 'Fit India Campaign'.

Slamming Congress for its alleged Muslim appeasement politics, Mr Modi said, "For them this section has been only Muslims, but for us these people are Indians".

In this context, the Prime Minister said right from the likes of former president Dr APJ Abdul Kalam and freedom fighter Abdul Ghaffār Khan, for the BJP and the NDA government, everyone is Indian first.

Had we toed Cong track, Art 370 & Triple Talaq would not have been repealed: PM

New Delhi, Feb 6 Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said that his government was mandated to bring about drastic changes in Indian governance and mindset and hence the NDA regime has worked with a new determination and sensitivity.

Mr Modi also said had his government followed Congress' track, many good things would not have been achieved and Article 370 and Triple Talaq would not have been abolished.

"The people of India have not only changed the Sarkar. They want the Sarokar (functional style and mindset) to be changed as well. Had we worked according to the old ways and thought processes, Article 370 would never have been history. Muslim women would have kept suffering due to Triple Talaq," the Prime Minister said in Lok Sabha replying to the debate on Motion of Thanks to President's address to the joint sitting of Parliament.

In this context, he listed out some of the achievements of his government and said one significant part of the latest Bodo agreement is that all militant groups from the region have come forward to participate at the peace process and join the mainstream.

"We have brought a new dawn for the people of north east. New morning has come and there is fresh light," he said.

The Prime Minister said all the members of Parliament should dedicate themselves in the current session to work on economic issues.

He said the criticism of his government reflects that the opposition leaders also repose faith in his government."You all know, if anyone can deliver, it is my government," the Prime Minister said.

"Despite many efforts, the Bodo issue was unsolved for years. The Bodo Accord signed now is special because it has brought all stakeholders together and we are moving towards a more peaceful era," he said.

He said it is due to the works of his government that the Northeast is becoming a growth engine.

"Great work has been done in so many sectors. Ministers and officials are regularly visiting the region," he said.

The Prime Minister also said it is due to the speed of this government that in the last five years.

"Thirty seven crore people got bank accounts, 11 crore people got toilets in their homes, 13 crore people got gas connections and two crore people got their own homes," he said.

"India can no longer wait for problems to remain unsolved. And, rightfully so. That is why, our aim is - Speed and scale and also determination and decisiveness,'' the Prime Minister asserted.

The BJP-led regime is working with sensitivity and trying to bring in solutions, he said.

Taking potshots at Opposition, he said, "....Gandhiji is Life for us". He said the government will give focus on job creation; but "we will ensure that your joblessness (days out of power) does not end".

Describing Jammu and Kashmir as the crown jewel of India, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday said the identity of Kashmir was buried when the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits began in 1990.

He also said no one can side with the statements of three detained chief ministers of the erstwhile state of Jammu and Kashmir who had said that abrogation of provisions of Article 370 will separate Kashmir from India.

"Who made Kashmir only about land grabbing? Who made Kashmir's identity only about bombs and guns? Can anyone forget that dark night of January? In reality, Kashmiri identity is closely linked with harmony," he said replying to a debate on Motion of Thanks to the President's Address in Lok Sabha.

Modi said Kashmir's identity was buried on January 19, 1990 when Kashmiri Pandits started leaving the valley due to militancy.

The prime minister said statements made by former chief ministers Mehbooba Mufti, Farooq Abdullah and Omar Abdullah on the abrogation of provisions of Article 370 are not acceptable.

"Many said that Kashmir will be on fire if Article 370 is removed. Many are questioning us for detaining some political leaders. On August 5, Mehbooba Mufti said that India had betrayed Kashmir and we would have been better with deciding otherwise in 1947. Can we accept such people?

"Omar Abdullah said that removing Article 370 will separate Kashmir from India. Farooq Abdullah said that if Article 370 is removed then no one will unfurl the national flag in Kashmir. How can we side with them," he asked.

Modi said such statements made by the former chief ministers were unacceptable.

"These are leaders who don't trust Kashmiri people that is why they used such language. But we trusted Kashmiris and abrogated Article 370," he said.

The prime minister said Kashmir is the crown jewel of India and his government has faith in the people of the valley where development measures are being taken.

"The abrogation of Article 370 has led to the complete integration of Jammu and Kashmir with the rest of the country," he said.

He said the real identity of Jammu and Kashmir is its egalitarian attitude towards all faiths and its Sufi tradition, and added that the region cannot be left behind.

The prime minister said the restrictions imposed in the Union Territory are being removed and union ministers are going to various of parts of the region, getting direct feedback from the people. The government would definitely act upon the feedback, he said.

Modi said his government is committed to work for the welfare of the people of Jammu and Kashmir and for its all round development.

He said Ladakh would be developed as a carbon neutral Union Territory.

Prime Minister defended National Population Register (NPR), saying it was being updated to allow the rightful beneficiaries get the benefit of government welfare schemes.

In Rajya Sabha, he said the NPR was first done in 2010 and later updated in 2015.

He said census and NPR are "usual administrative" processes which have been carried out previously as well but have now suddenly become contentious.

Questions asked in the NPR are purely governance related, he said citing the example of asking citizens of the language spoken by them and their parents are deeply linked to the schools that need to be set up in that particular area.

"Dont try to mislead people," he said, asking opposition parties to not politicise the issue for narrow political gains.

"They are opposing (NPR) for narrow and frivolous political narrative. This is anti-poor," he said, adding his government had made productive use of the data collected by previous NPR to give benefits of the schemes to the poor.

"We have record of your NPR, no citizen was persecuted based on that record of NPR," he said, citing the statement of the home minister of the Congress-led UPA government appealing to citizens to enrol in the exercise.

Changing Face Of Indian Idiot Box

(by Swati Deb in 2004) for Sulekha.com

Breaking a tradition, charming ladies with their typical filmy ascent and ‘nakhras’ have already entered into a citadel till recently held by men – cricket commentary.
Truly, gone are the days when Doordarshan held monopoly either entertaining or irritating people with its usual ministerial coverage and one liners from Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi : “Hamey Dekhna Hai.” Indian ‘Idiot Box’ has come a long way since the serials like ‘Buniyad’ and ‘Humlog’ held the audience captive. By nineties the rule had changed once private players starting with Subhas Chandra’s Zee TV came into the scene.

Then came the era of multiple channels and soaps with K series and game shows. And if 2003 coverage can set a trend, the television is on for another transitional period.
Mandira Bedi of serial ‘Shanti’ fame or disgrace - incidentally an original DD soap- has walked in shoulder to shoulder with Charu Sharma and former cricketers- holding the fort for about two-hour long pre-match and an hour or so post-match coverage sexily called ‘Extra Innings.’ DD gave a later version ‘the fourth empire’

“I guess it’s my strong interest in cricket – especially watching live cricket – that got me the role,” Bedi was quoted once.

She is not alone. Two other ladies Sandhya Mridul and Maria Goretti have jumped into the band- wagon in entering the cricket commentary world. The performance so far dose not have reasons to evoke quite a large fan following only to the satisfaction of critics. While some could be finding it irritating the way Bedi puts her hand on ex-cricketer’s shoulder, others find it discomfort to stomach her unorthodox one liners like “ we are to raise India’s spirit” or childish smile with phrase, “Hum jeet gaye”.

By 2001, there came an enchanting departure by bringing the reality television coverage into limelight.

Mid-March 2001 marked the revolutionary transition in Indian television history when all leading channels started beaming footage of tainted politicians and army officials accept currency notes and talk shady deals. For next few days, television rating points (TRP) for major commercial programmes and serials had dropped with current affairs programme holding audience in front of once nicknamed idiot box.

The channels, especially Star News and Zee News, made most of it as they repeatedly showed footage of politicians like Bangaru Laxman and Jaya Jaitley discuss deal making in dollars and lakhs.
A similar taste of reality sight had resurfaced during Vajpayee-Musharraf summit at the Taj city. Zee News and Aaj Tak emerged winners bringing life various facets of Pakistani ruler’s visit. The climax was when a stunned nation watched life Gen Pervez Musharraf’s media coup when he exploited a breakfast meeting with Indian editors to drive his point on Kashmir.
Reality coverage again tasted major success as Sun TV beamed the ill- treatment meted to DMK Chief M Karunananidhi and Union Ministers during a late night operation of Tamil Nadu cops at the diktats of Chief Minister Jayalalitha. The public opinion was so much affected by the coverage that the NDA regime found a suitable handle to order the then Governor Fatima Devi packing.
September 11- kamikaze on World Trade Center and Pentagon brought Indian homes the home truth of the vulnerability of world’s most powerful nation. Thanks to all major foreign channels.

In 2002, Gujarat dominated television screens for months as footage of a burning train, Masjids being ransacked and minorities being killed and forced to shift to relief camps were telecast. The Swaminarain temple attack on September 24, 2002 took the reality coverage to a climex when a popular television reporter was chased by right wing activists with the treat to give him a thrashing.

Television watchers maintain that, however, women constitute the bulk Indian television audience. It is therefore so much of flirting with ‘Saas Bahu’ type of themes for the serials. It is the manifestation of this very idea that Sony management thought of fielding their ‘women team’ to bring in World Cup 2003.And as time progressed there were mutiple channels all round. Housewives are now slowly emerging experts in their own misgivings on every topic under the sky. There is, of course, typical mother-in-law variety approach to things. The other day I heard my mom-in-law lecture me on Saurav Ganguly’s captainship ability and on my part I found myself telling her how George Bush mismanaged Iraq. Few years back, it would not have been possible!

Changing govts every Five years has hurt Kerala: K V Thomas (in 2016)
New Delhi,
Changing governments every five years has harmed Kerala, senior Congress leader K.V. Thomas says, exuding confidence that his party will make history by retaining power in the state.
Thomas also insisted that the Congress-Left tie-up in West Bengal “will have no impact” on the May 16 assembly polls in Kerala, where the two are in direct conflict.
“I am confident the Congress and UDF (United Democratic Front) will return to power,” Thomas told (this blogger) IANS in an interview.

(story run on May 1, 2016)

“People of Kerala have begun to realise that changing governments every five years has often harmed development.

“People are realizing that in a state like Kerala there is a need for  continuity in governance. Hence, we as Congressmen have every chance of a pleasant surprise this year,” Thomas said.

He said the politics of Kerala and West Bengal were different.

“In Kerala, we (Left and Congress) are strong opponents of each other. But in Bengal we needed to come together to fight the tyranny of (Chief Minister) Mamata Banerjee.”

Analysing the situation in Kerala, he said: “Developmental works and programmes like the chief minister’s ‘Jan Sampark’ programme, wherein he goes to every district and village periodically, as well as a number of welfare schemes and major projects like Kochi Metro and Vizhinjam port will help the Congress and UDF.”

The state government has signed an agreement with Adani group to build  the Rs.7,525 crore port.

“The Congress government has also inaugurated the Kannur airport. The government is working on a budget airline for Gulf countries,” said Thomas, who has also been Kerala’s excise and tourism minister.

He said in the past some good programmes launched by Congress governments were either stalled or altered when the Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) took power.

“One such initiative was in the education sector where the Congress  encouraged private educational institutions along with those run by the government. But once the Left took power, they favoured bringing everything under government control,” Thomas said.

“The reality is that often the government does not have adequate financial and technical resources.”

Thomas said the Congress had been moving towards total prohibition “step by step” but the Communists have a different perception.

Kerala voters have changed governments in every election since the 1980s.

Asked about his two-year stint as chairman of Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament, which has recommended bringing the Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) under parliament’s control, Thomas said: “The stint has been particularly satisfactory as we made good recommendations in terms of reforms for PACs both in the centre and state levels and also on the role of CAG.

“Besides stressing that appointment of CAG should not be left as the  exclusive purview of the government, the PAC also felt that state legislatures should work towards having independent cadres of officials like the secretariats of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha,” he said.

Prosperity in countries like  India is "good" but it triggers increased demand for "better nutrition" which in turn leads to higher food prices, US President George Bush had said in May 2008
This was our take:

In the new generation diplomacy, the US definitely occupies the most important place on Indian thinking wavelength but India is no sub-contractor of America in the global context wherein Uncle Sam can decide what and how much Indians should eat or not!

US President George W Bush blaming the 'wealthy' lifestyle of India's huge middle class for the spiraling global food prices endorsing his Secretary of State Condeleezza Rice views only adds insult to the injury for Indians.

It's true the Indian middle class has grown in size, the 350 million as Bush himself says, and enhanced purchasing ability to look for better nutrition and better food.

But India is growingly self-sufficient in terms of its requirements as it is no longer a big food buyer. India, in fact, has become a fairly major food exporter and proper planning like a farm output policy can help it better.

The Hon'ble US President seemed to have forgotten some of his making and American follies that have propelled the food shortages and the price rise.

For long, the US and a few major countries have been diverting the agricultural land for bio-fuel purposes. The Americans also have selective amnesia on their faulty foreign policy vis-à-vis the Gulf region.

"One of the main reasons for this spiraling inflation is high crude oil prices," says an analyst. "One, the US raid on Iraq. In fact, the rise in crude oil price began to rise from the moment US signaled that it would raid Iraq. This was in 1990s," he points out.

The other reason is the general thought that Bush has interests in oil companies, particularly those based in Texas. It is, therefore, natural for him to ensure that crude oil prices stay high. In fact, these companies are supposed to be his main sponsors and he draws his strength from the Texas oil firms.

Moreover, the US government has also set a higher target for production of ethanol from corn, that has led to diversion of corn to fuel from food. Farmers in the US overwhelmingly switched over the growing corn

While this is one aspect of inflation, the other vital aspect dwelling on the rice and as such the US leaders are talking about Indians' rice eating also deserves a closer look.

The United Nations had declared 2004 as the International Year of Rice but what was notable is that the importance of the commodity as the staple foodgrain for households in India Asia was likely to decline.

One issue contributing for this theory was that the rapid urbanization and growing demand for housing and industrial activities would make inroads into land under rice cultivation in most countries. This may affect its production and create supply distortions.

A few years back, survey revealed that a more serious factor in the long run was the steady shift of consumers towards fruits, vegetables and meat as result of rising incomes, changing dietary habits and lifestyles -- like love for junk votes in urban areas.

All this, too, may affect demand for rice to some extent. However, what will be the most critical factor affecting rice cultivation is water availability. India, experts say, may not remain unaffected from these changes and the growing mall culture.

For an overwhelming Indians, especially in coastal belt and tribal region of northeast India, rice is the staple food. Statistics show, the rice consumption in India has remained below 100 kg per person per year for long while it improved during the period 1970-72 to 1989-91 to edge down a bit in 1999-01.

Notably, China's consumption is better than India's and Bush and his team may not know that even sometime back a tiny trouble-torn Myanmar topped the league of rice consuming countries with a little over 200 kg per person per year. Vietnam, Bangladesh, Cambodia and Indonesia, all rice producing countries, have higher per capita rice consumption.

Does Bush know that over 95 per cent rice is produced in developing countries and most in Asia. In India the rice production has also gone up gradually.

Jatropha makes this man do anything at any cost

By Nirendra Dev, Commodity Online May 26, 2008

Banks denied him funding, the red-tapism and bureaucracy was also of no help. That did not discourage Akshay Vir Singh Tyagi from venturing into Jatropha cultivation seeing the huge potential for biofuels in the coming years.

He has already promoted Jatropha cultivation in 5,500 acres of land in Uttar Pradesh and is aiming high. Tyagi already has invitation to set up projects in Maharashtra.

"Bio-fuel is a necessity now and not a matter of choice or option. Cultivating for bio-fuel production can help create jobs, make use of the wasteland and is an eco friendly venture," according to Akshay Vir Singh Tyagi, proprietor of Delhi-based Aryan Mushrooms and Bio Fuels.

In a chat with Commodity Online at his office in the capital, he lamented on the absence of a structured policy, especially on the funding pattern for bio-fuel industry. The government and private sector should go all out to create a successful bio-fuel revolution in India, Tyagi said.

He said bio-fuels and cultivation of non-food crops like Jatropha offer win-win like situation and the benefits can be reaped for as many as 45 years.

Lot of difficulties faced at the implementation stage has to be solved, especially on granting subsidies to the farmers in encouraging them towards cultivation of non-food crops like Jatropha.

"The mechanism to grant subsidies only on the pre-condition that they will seek bank loans is erroneous at least for the present stage. Instead, what they need is cash-based subsidies as the funding pattern from banks is riddled with many lacunae and bureaucratic hassles," he said.

Tyagi said that his own experience with a public sector bank was disappointing as it summarily turned own its request. He said his experience with another public sector bank was also not good as despite going ahead with the project in December the deal has been

"I am continuing with the project of Jatropha cultivation with an initial investment of Rs 2.5 crore in seven districts of UP. But the bank's involvement has been cut short," he remarked.

Tyagi, however, said having understood the significance of Jatropha cultivation and bio-fuels and as farmers would need due encouragement he is going ahead with the project.

"I started Jatropha cultivation from scratch in 2004-05 and the gestation period is 3-5 years. I am expecting that my first results will be coming only from July-August later this year," he said.

Tyagi said he is already seriously toying with the idea of approaching a premier foreign bank.

Tyagi, who is carrying out Jatropha cultivation and related projects involving around 350 farmers and their land, however, said despite red-tapism and bureaucratic lethargy, the people in general and farmers and the younger generation have already shown fascination towards "these alternative means of energy creation".

"It's most encouraging that even politicians are not lagging behind," he said adding, no politician created any hassle for him in Uttar Pradesh while Shiv Sena MP Tukaram Renge Patil from Parbani in Maharashtra has already invited him to commence a "business model on Jatropha cultivation and bio-fuels" in his constituency. "I am seriously considering the proposal," said

Tyagi, who hails from a agricultural family in Nehtaur town in Bijnaur district in UP, said at present his project is functioning in the districts of Allahabad, Jaunpur, Chitrakut, Pratapgarh, Fatehpur and Bandha.

"Now I have 5500 acres of land under Jatropha cultivation and my aim is to have 1 lakh acre of land spread across many states by 2011," he said.

Corporate houses like Liberty Shoes and Kejriwal Papers are also running his project on a turn-key basis in Chennai and in Bhuj in Gujarat.
