What others say on Modi's move to repeal Farm Laws ? And why are these vital ones?

What others say on Modi's move to repeal Farm Laws ? And why are these vital ones?

Climbing out of this hole must be a consultative process that takes the public along, ifnot all farmers. That must happen: the status quo on the farm front is not sustainable. The farm law repeal must be a beginning, not the end. Realising that is a question of deft political management.

-- The Economic Times in edit

For now, the wisest course for the farmers would be to end the agitation and return to their fields. Though agriculture was easily the most resilient sector during the Covid pandemic, Indian farming finds itself at the crossroads, with climate change and dwindling natural resources being among the major challenges.

There is no room for intransigence anymore. Our agriculture can be future-ready only if the spirit of cooperation and collaboration prevails over discord and discontent. The Centre should honour the hardy farmers’ love for the soil and soul of this land. They farm and fight for the nation, and their apprehensions should be allayed while the Centre regains their valued trust, looking beyond political and electoral considerations.  - Edit, 'The Tribune'

## The BJP government aimed to rejuvenate private markets. The unstated intention is that if privatemarkets are created and integrated, prices will be determined in them....This is how the Chicago market, world's biggest commodity market works....That is the kind of modern market mechanism the Govt ofIndia seemed to be aiming at. Whether a good idea or not, many farmers - especially in northern India -do not like it. - Ashok V Desai, former chief consultant to Ministry of Finance.

# With the importance of identity politics trumpling almost all, being against the farm laws was unlikely to beenough for this agrarian grouping to have jumped BJP ship....In 2017, months after being batteredby demonetisation's effects, voters even in western UP's sugarcane belt most affected by notebandi - still choseModi's party. -- Indrajit Hazra in 'The Economic Times'

$$ For the BJP then, dropping political pride and retearing on the laws, instead could open uppolitical possibilities. In West UP, Jat anger could be neutralised and Bharatiya Kisan Union leaderRakesh Tikait could even become a potential ally against the Jayant Chaudhary-Akhilesh Yadav duo.In Punjab, BJP-Amarinder-Akali Dal alliance would be possible, with all three fighting a battle for relevance.
