India welcomes Donald Trump-Iran ceasefire :: Says - "unimpeded freedom of navigation would prevail through Strait of Hormuz"

India on Wednesday welcomed ceasefire announcement between Donald Trump and Iran and hoped that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia.

"We welcome the ceasefire reached and hope that it will lead to a lasting peace in West Asia. As we have continuously advocated earlier, de-escalation, dialogue and diplomacy are essential to bring an early end to the ongoing conflict," an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs said.

It is presumed that the US and Iran now will engage in negotiations over the next two weeks, buying some time to try to reach a permanent settlement.

It won't be a smooth ride nevertheless.

"The conflict has already caused immense suffering to people and disrupted global energy supply and trade networks," it said adding:

India also will expect that "unimpeded freedom of navigation and global flow of commerce would prevail through the Strait of Hormuz".

Bringing respite across the globe; the US and Iran agreed to a two-week conditional ceasefire on Tuesday evening, which included a temporary reopening of the strait of Hormuz. Just hours earlier, Trump had written on Truth Social: “A whole civilization will die tonight, never to be brought back again".

The deal allowed Trump to extricate himself from what was shaping up to be a treacherous choice – either escalating with his promise that a "whole civilisation will die tonight" or backing down.

The second option would have certainly undermined the US credibility.

But the last ball is yet to be bowled.

The US president may have only bought himself a temporary reprieve.
