Monk leading protest against atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh arrested in Dhaka

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, a prominent Hindu leader and ISKCON monk, has been detained in Dhaka. 

He has been charged with sedition charges after leading a large protest against targeted attacks on the Hindu community. 

Several incidents of violence against minorities in Bangladesh have been reported in the past couple of months after the ouster of former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina.

Bangladesh has been embroiled in unrest since June due to massive protests, which initially started as agitation over quotas in government jobs but soon turned anti-government.

Chinmoy Prabhu, a prominent monk leading protests against atrocities on Hindus in Bangladesh, was allegedly arrested by the Dhaka Police's Detective Branch on Monday (November 25). He was allegedly detained at Dhaka airport.

The monk has been arrested on charges of disrespecting the Bangladeshi flag at a rally which he had addressed in October, according to the Bangladeshi media.
Chinmoy Prabhu had addressed a massive protest rally in the violence-hit country's Rangpur on Friday (November 22) to protest against atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.  This development comes amid heightened tensions in Bangladesh over the rising reports of violence against Hindus, including attacks on temples, homes, and businesses.

Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari, the President of Pundarik Dham in Bangladesh, was one of the 18 charged with sedition over hoisting of a saffron flag in Bangladesh.

The sedition case came at a time when Hindu organisations held a large gathering on an eight-point demand. They demanded a tribunal to prosecute those who oppress minorities, bringing a law on minority protection, and establishing a ministry for minorities.  

Following the ouster of Hasina and her escape to India, there have been multiple incidents of violence against minorities, especially Hindus, in the country. 

Mobs have vandalised and looted businesses and houses of Hindus, and even lynched them. 

Recently in a move against Hindus, Bangladeshi police have branded the Hindu religious organization ISKCON as a "terrorist group" alleging that its members are involved in the recent spate of communal violence. 

This accusation follows a prior sedition charge filed against Chinmoy Krishna Das, a prominent ISKCON preacher, intensifying scrutiny and pressure on Hindu communities in Bangladesh.
